Recent research report from market research firm Counterpoint ResearchRefers toAlthough eSIM has been promoted in the market for a long time and many telecom operators now provide eSIM services, most respondents still do not know what eSIM is. Among the respondents who know about eSIM, only about 39% are actually eSIM users.
This research report covers a total of 3535 respondents in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland, and Japan. Telecommunications services in these countries and regions are well-developed. Although the sampling proportion is not large, it still reflects a certain degree of eSIM usage.
Among them, only 35% of the respondents are aware of eSIM technology, and among these respondents who are aware of eSIM technology, only 39% are using eSIM services. At the same time, among these users of eSIM services, the satisfaction rate is as high as 90%.
This result means that the eSIM function can indeed bring convenience to users, including making it easier to use different telecom network services or transfer SIM card data. When traveling abroad, it is also convenient to use eSIM network services provided by other countries without having to frequently remove the SIM card tray of the mobile phone.
However, the reason why eSIM technology is currently less known and used by many people may be that consumers do not believe it is necessary to replace their long-used SIM cards with eSIMs, and may even prefer to use traditional SIM cards. In addition, except for the iPhone, which offers eSIM functions in the entire series, most brands only configure eSIM functions in mid-to-high-end or flagship models, resulting in a low penetration rate of eSIM functions.
If Apple plans to further remove the traditional SIM card slot from iPhone models and fully embrace the eSIM function, it may encourage more mobile phone brands to follow suit and remove the SIM card slot, thereby further reducing the thickness of the mobile phone or increasing the battery capacity of the mobile phone, thereby increasing the proportion of eSIM usage.
