Citing statistics from market research firm Canalys on the global mobile phone market in the second quarter of this year, Xiaomi said that its current global smartphone market share has reached 17%, surpassing Apple to become the second largest mobile phone manufacturer, with a growth rate of 83% compared to the same period last year.
The reason why it has risen to the second place in market share is partly due to the decline in Huawei's overall market share due to the US government's export restrictions, but also related to Xiaomi's recent continued expansion of its global market layout and the support it has attracted from many users.
Canalys' second-quarter performance data on the global smartphone market shows that Xiaomi is expanding rapidly in overseas markets, with sales in Latin America increasing by more than 300% compared to last year, more than 150% in the African market, and more than 50% in Western Europe.
Canalys believes that Xiaomi has transformed from a challenger to a market leader, and continues to improve its integrated telecommunications and public market strategies. It may even aim to surpass Samsung and become the world's largest smartphone manufacturer in the future.
In a letter to all employees, Xiaomi co-founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun stated, "Becoming the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer is a major milestone in Xiaomi's development. After five years of arduous remedial efforts, Xiaomi's product capabilities have significantly improved, opening up and establishing a firm foothold in the high-end market. Next, Xiaomi will further strengthen its core capabilities to secure its position as the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer as quickly as possible."
According to statistics, Xiaomi shipped 2020 million smartphones worldwide in the fourth quarter of 4340, a 31.5% year-over-year increase. This marked the company's first-ever leapfrogging of Apple and its return to third place globally. In the first quarter of 2021, Apple climbed to second place globally with a 15% market share, while Xiaomi followed closely behind with a 14% share. Its global shipments reached 4940 million units, a 69.1% year-over-year increase.
According to Xiaomi's first quarter financial report this year, Xiaomi phones have entered more than 100 countries and regions around the world, ranking first in 12 countries and regions, second in the European market, and has been ranked first in the Indian market for many consecutive years.
