Sony recently announced that it will cease production of its recordable Blu-ray discs, MiniDisc (MD) discs, and MiniDV tapes, among other storage media products. Production is expected to cease after February, and it has been confirmed that no subsequent products will be released.
In fact, Sony announced last year that it would lay off employees at its optical media factory and also confirmed that it would gradually stop producing recordable disc products, including recordable Blu-ray discs.
However, the recordable Blu-ray discs that Sony has stopped producing refer to 25 specifications of its products, including single-time and rewritable ones, with storage capacities ranging from 128GB to 11GB. However, the Blu-ray discs provided to content companies for distributing movies and other discs will continue to be produced.
As for MiniDisc and MiniDV tapes, they have been on the market for quite a while (the former was launched in 1992 and the latter in 1995). Nowadays, many storage methods have changed significantly. Most users prefer to use memory cards that are easy to carry, have larger capacity and higher storage stability, or store data directly in cloud services. As a result, the usage rate of Sony's storage media in the past has been greatly reduced.
Even though Sony no longer offers recordable Blu-ray Discs, many companies still produce related products, but they may cease production in the next few years. As for MiniDisc and MiniDV tapes, Sony developed the specifications, so once Sony ceases production, devices using these storage media will also officially fade from the market.
