according toDutch website LetsGoDigital reported thatSony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Huawei because Huawei launched the Watch GT series of smart watches with the word "GT".
The lawsuit stems from Huawei's application for the "GT" trademark to the European Intellectual Property Office since 2015, which attracted the attention of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a protest and lawsuit in 2016, but Huawei still launched the "GT" between 2018 and 2019.Smart watches named Watch GT and Watch GT2, and Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a lawsuit again in 2019, but it is clear that the two sides did not reach a consensus.
Sony Interactive Entertainment believes that Huawei's use of the "GT" name on its products could mislead consumers into believing it is related to the Gran Turismo series of games published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, Huawei maintains that its registered trademark is only used for its watch products and that the "GT" name is not exclusively owned by Sony.
Sony Interactive Entertainment filed another round of lawsuits in August of this year, while Huawei submitted an application for a "GT"-related trademark in the UK in early September. It has recently added applications for trademarks including "GT8," "GT9," "GT3," and "GT5," corresponding to wearable devices such as watches.
