Sony released an intriguing teaser image earlier via its official Instagram account. The image features the slogan "Chase your dream" and a large Roman numeral "V" faintly visible in the background. It also teases a major announcement scheduled for 9:12 AM Eastern Time on December 2 (10:12 PM Taiwan Time on December 2).
Although not explicitly stated by the official sources, it almost certainly indicates that a new full-frame mirrorless camera, the α7 V (A7M5), will be announced.
After a four-year hiatus, the update reportedly incorporates some stacked image sensors.
Based on the product cycle, the previous generation α7 IV (A7M4) was launched in 2021, which is about four years ago. This is consistent with Sony's past update rhythm for camera products.
According to current market rumors, the α7 V is expected to feature a newly designed 3300-megapixel sensor with a partially stacked design by Sony. This technology is expected to significantly improve readout speed, reduce rolling shutter effect, and enhance continuous shooting performance without substantially increasing costs.
In terms of video recording specifications, the α7 V is expected to support 4K 60fps recording (though cropping or pixel binning may still be required), thus meeting the current mainstream video creation needs. In addition, Sony may also simultaneously release at least two new lenses to complement this new camera.
Imaging business profits hit record high, new camera price may not be affordable.
According to Sony's recent announcementSecond quarter financial report for fiscal year 2025Its Imaging and Sensing Solutions (I&SS) division performed exceptionally well, with quarterly revenue reaching 6146 billion yen (an annual increase of 15%) and operating profit increasing by 50% to 1383 billion yen, both setting new historical highs for the same period.
In its financial report, Sony pointed out that in addition to strong demand for mobile device sensors, increased sales of image sensors for digital cameras were also a key factor driving profits. This shows that even amidst competition from smartphones, demand in the high-end camera market remains robust.
However, with upgraded specifications and the impact of inflation, it is widely expected that the price of the α7 V will rise accordingly. Considering that the α7 IV already started at $2500, the price of the new α7 V will likely reach a new high, testing consumers' wallets.
