Sony recently announced the launch of a new member of the LinkBuds series of headphones – the LinkBuds Clip. This true wireless earphone with a "C-shaped ear clip" design is clearly designed for users who dislike the feeling of foreign objects in their ear canals or who need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. It also provides an alternative to the existing LinkBuds Open earphones.
"C-shaped" fashion accessories for all-day wear
The LinkBuds Clip continues the LinkBuds series' soft color palette and geometric aesthetics. Its design features a capsule shape with one wide and one narrow section connected by an arc-shaped mechanism, forming a unique "C-shaped" clip-on structure. This design emphasizes a "non-in-ear" wearing experience, significantly reducing pressure from prolonged wear. It also boasts an IPX4 waterproof rating, allowing for a truly immersive listening experience whether you're outdoors, working from home, or caring for children.
In terms of color options, the first wave offers four colors: purple, beige, green, and black. The charging case maintains the series' consistent "jewelry box" style, featuring a contrasting design with a glossy upper half and a matte lower half. The manufacturer also includes silicone accessories to increase stability when wearing the product, and different colors can be combined.
The use of flagship headphone tuning technology and digital sound leakage prevention are highlights.
Although positioned as an open-back headphone, Sony emphasizes that the LinkBuds Clip inherits the tuning technology from the flagship 1000X series headphones. In terms of features, it supports DSEE digital audio enhancement, 360 Reality Audio technology, and a 10-band customizable equalizer.
Addressing the most criticized issues of "sound leakage" and "unclear sound" in open-back headphones, Sony has provided the following features through digital acoustic technology:
• Voice enhancement mode:In noisy outdoor environments, the human voice frequency band is enhanced digitally, allowing users to hear it more clearly.
• Anti-sound leakage mode:In quiet indoor environments (such as libraries or offices), it automatically reduces sound leakage to avoid disturbing others.
In addition, LinkBuds Clip incorporates AI call recording technology to ensure clear voice transmission for call needs.
37-hour long battery life, fast charging for even better performance.
Battery life is a major highlight of this product. A single charge provides up to 9 hours of continuous playback, and the charging case extends the battery life to 37 hours. It also supports fast charging, requiring only 3 minutes of charging for 1 hour of use.
The suggested retail price is 200 euros (approximately NT$6800), and it is expected to be launched in global markets starting in January.
Analysis of viewpoints
It must be said that although Sony took this step late, it can be considered to be in line with the trend.
In fact, Huawei had already done so two or three years ago.FreeClipProducts like these demonstrated the market potential of "clip-on headphones." Their non-invasive nature and comfortable, extended wear make them an excellent solution for many consumers who cannot tolerate in-ear noise-canceling headphones. Furthermore, other companies, including Bose, subsequently launched their own versions.Headphone products with similar design schemesSony's decision to categorize this product line under the "Always On" LinkBuds series is logically very reasonable.
However, for those who have long followed Sony's hardware development, a slight apprehension is inevitable. Recent market rumors suggest that Sony, in order to strengthen its television business, will form a joint venture with China's TCL for its BRAVIA brand, with TCL leading product development. Against this backdrop, seeing the LinkBuds Clip adopt a relatively mature (even common among Chinese brands) ear-clip design, I sincerely hope this product retains the acoustic spirit and R&D commitment of Sony's Osaki and Roppongi teams in Japan, rather than simply a market compromise through rebranding.
Ultimately, Sony's digital signal processing (such as the digital anti-leakage technology emphasized here) and DSEE digital audio enhancement technology are the key factors that set it apart from its competitors.
