SEGA earlierAnnounceIt acquired Rovio, the Finnish game company that created the "Angry Birds" series of games, for 7.06 million euros (approximately NT$235.88 billion) to expand its presence in the mobile game market.
The transaction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year. After the acquisition is completed, games including "Angry Birds" and assets such as the Beacon game platform will belong to SEGA.
SEGA President Haruki Satomi said that buying Rovio Entertainment Oyj will ensure SEGA's ability to develop in the mobile game market, while also attracting more players through games such as "Angry Birds".
However, after launching the "Angry Birds" series of games and generating considerable profits through derivative animations and films, Rovio hasn't released any subsequent impressive works. Even subsequent "Angry Birds" games haven't generated the same level of popularity as the original game. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether SEGA's acquisition of Rovio will change things.
