To enable AI to more effectively assist learning, OpenAI announced the introduction of a new "Dynamic visual explanations" feature to ChatGPT. When users ask about specific mathematical and scientific concepts, ChatGPT will no longer simply output difficult text and static formulas, but will generate interactive visual charts. Users can directly adjust variables in the dialog box and observe in real time how changes in values affect the final result and the direction of the graph.
This feature is currently available free of charge to all ChatGPT users and is expected to significantly change the learning experience for high school and university students.
Bringing abstract concepts to life: The first wave covers over 70 mathematical models
This new feature, called Interactive Visual Illustration, already covers more than 70 core mathematical and scientific concepts in its first wave, spanning fields such as algebra, geometry, and physics.
Previously, when users asked ChatGPT about physical or mathematical laws, they would usually receive a long textual explanation. However, with the new feature, when users ask about the Pythagorean theorem, ChatGPT will directly generate an interactive model of a right triangle. You can drag the lever to change the length of the two sides, and the value of the hypotenuse and the geometric shape will change accordingly in real time.
When learning Coulomb's law to calculate electrostatic force "F = k q1 q2r2", or the lens imaging formula "f = d0 + d1", users can freely adjust the amount of charge, focal length, or object distance, and immediately see the effect of these changes on the final force and imaging position.
Break away from the get-rich-quick mentality of "just giving answers" and connect with Study Mode learning mode.
OpenAI points out that this visualization update is primarily designed for high school and college learners. Research shows that compared to traditional rote memorization, visual and interactive learning activities help students build a deeper understanding of underlying concepts.
This update also continues OpenAI's "Study Mode" launched last summer. At that time, in order to solve the problem that many students simply relied on AI to "do homework and copy answers", Study Mode deliberately changed ChatGPT's role from an "all-purpose answer machine" to a "Socratic tutor", encouraging students to find the answers themselves through questioning and guidance.
The newly added dynamic visual illustrations, while not limited to Study Mode, share the same core concept—to enhance the true "thinking" process rather than simply "outputting results."
Analysis of viewpoints
The interactive visual features that OpenAI has added to ChatGPT may seem like just a UI/UX interface upgrade, but the strategic significance behind it is profound.
As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent, the biggest concern in the education sector has been that "AI is destroying students' thinking and problem-solving abilities." OpenAI has clearly recognized this pain point and is working hard to rehabilitate ChatGPT's image from "a cheating tool" to "an all-around AI-powered personal tutor." By transforming complex physics and mathematical formulas into interactive sandboxes that can be "played with at will," ChatGPT has successfully elevated multimodal abilities from passive "storytelling based on images" to active "logic visualization."
