Google announced the most significant driving navigation update for Google Maps in nearly a decade –Immersive navigation"Immersive Navigation" upgrades the original 2D map to a 3D rendered screen. In addition, the new "Ask Maps" feature directly integrates the Gemini chatbot into the map, allowing users to perform more complex location searches and itinerary planning using natural language.
Immersive Navigation: A Combination of 3D Real-Scenes and Natural Voice Control
Google considers this update its most significant upgrade to Google Maps driving navigation in nearly a decade. The new "Immersive Navigation" mode no longer just displays a 2D map of the area around the vehicle, but renders the surrounding environment in 3D. By giving nearby buildings and road signs such as overpasses more depth, Google believes this new perspective will help drivers more easily identify directions.
At the technical level, this experience is driven by the Gemini model. The model draws on Google Street View databases and aerial imagery to determine how elements are rendered, thereby eliminating visual distractions for the driver. Simultaneously, the model is intelligent enough to know when to highlight road elements such as crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs, ensuring users don't miss interchanges or important turns.
In addition to the visual upgrades, voice navigation has also become more natural. For example, when a user is driving on a highway looking for the correct exit, the voice assistant will give instructions such as "drive past this exit and take the next one." This feature is expected to be particularly helpful when driving abroad and unfamiliar with road names.
Regarding trip planning, the map now provides a street view preview of the destination before departure and recommends suitable parking locations. When the app suggests alternative routes, it also details the advantages and disadvantages of each route, such as: although the driving time is longer, there is less traffic along the way.
Ask Maps: Your Personal Map AI Assistant
In what Google calls the "Gemini era," the company has naturally found a way to integrate chatbots into its Maps service.
Within the app, users will see a new icon labeled "Ask Maps". Clicking the icon and entering a natural language suggestion will allow Gemini to provide an answer using all the information available in Google Maps. Google positions this feature as a way to access information that traditional maps cannot provide.
For example, users can simply ask Gemini to help them find a place where they can charge their devices, buy a coffee, and avoid long lines. In the past, this required users to sift through countless reviews to find the answer, but now it's no longer that troublesome.
Furthermore, Gemini's results generated through Ask Maps provide personalized recommendations based on the locations users have previously searched and saved. Users can also directly act on these recommendations, easily completing tasks such as booking restaurants or saving locations.
