At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Sandisk announced a major brand strategy change. To help consumers more easily choose the right storage products for their needs, Sandisk announced the launch of the new "SANDISK Optimus" brand and integrated and renamed its highly acclaimed internal SSD product line.
This means that the WD_BLACK gaming series, which gamers were familiar with in the past, as well as the mainstream WD Blue NVMe SSD series, will gradually transition and be integrated into the new SANDISK Optimus brand.
Three major series: covering everyone from creators to hardcore gamers
Sandisk stated that this rebranding aims to make "performance tiers" more intuitive, allowing consumers to easily identify which product suits their needs. The new SANDISK Optimus family will be divided into three tiers:
• SANDISK Optimus (Standard Edition):
Predecessor:This corresponds to the existing WD Blue series (such as the WD Blue SN5100 NVMe SSD).
position:Designed specifically for content creators and mainstream users who demand faster speeds than traditional hard drives, it emphasizes a balance between performance and price, providing a smooth computing experience.
• SANDISK Optimus GX (Gaming Edition):
Predecessor:This corresponds to the existing WD_BLACK mid-range series (such as the WD_BLACK SN7100 NVMe SSD).
position:Targeting mainstream gamers, emphasizing "gaming without boundaries," it offers lightning-fast loading speeds and higher power efficiency to meet the needs of long-term gaming sessions.
• SANDISK Optimus GX PRO (Flagship Edition):
Predecessor:This corresponds to the original WD_BLACK flagship series (such as the WD_BLACK SN8100 NVMe SSD).
position:This is the pinnacle of the Optimus family, designed for developers, professionals, and hardcore gamers seeking the ultimate experience. Sandisk emphasizes that this series is suitable for building AI PCs, workstations, or high-end gaming consoles, combining state-of-the-art storage technology with massive capacity.
New packaging design, expected to go on sale in the first half of the year.
With the brand name change, Sandisk will also adopt a new product packaging and design language, emphasizing innovation and brand recognition. Heidi Arkinstall, Vice President of Global Consumer Brands at Sandisk, said, "The SANDISK Optimus brand redefines what performance means to consumers. Through this change, we make it easier for consumers to find solutions that meet their needs."
According to official plans, the SANDISK Optimus series, which adopts a brand new identity, will be launched in select channels around the world in the first half of 2026.
Analysis: Integrate resources and reclaim the "Sandisk" brand.
In the past, Western Digital Group owned both SanDisk (focusing on external devices and memory cards) and WD (focusing on internal devices, HDDs, and NAS). Although WD_BLACK has established a good reputation in the gaming community, the brand positioning is sometimes somewhat overlapping or confusing for the general public.
This move to bring all consumer-grade SSDs under the Sandisk brand, with Optimus as the new identifier, not only allows for the concentration of marketing resources but also demonstrates the group's intention to strengthen Sandisk's established professional image in the flash memory field. In particular, the transformation of WD_BLACK's high-end technologies (such as the SN8100) into the Optimus GX PRO, and the specific emphasis on meeting the needs of AI PCs, shows that Sandisk is preparing to meet the next wave of PC upgrades with a clearer product line.
However, for veteran gamers who are used to "Black" being synonymous with high performance, it may take some time to get used to the new name "Optimus GX".
