Samsung announces partnership with OpenAIEstablishing strategic partnershipsThe two companies will jointly promote the development of global AI infrastructure. According to Samsung, OpenAI's demand for memory is rapidly increasing, potentially reaching 90 DRAM wafers per month. Samsung will meet this demand with its high-performance, low-power DRAM product line.
In addition to supplying memory, Samsung also emphasized its differentiated capabilities in advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration technologies, enabling it to provide customized solutions tailored to OpenAI's system requirements. This move represents Samsung's move beyond being a memory supplier, aiming to further strengthen its strategic role in the AI era through its comprehensive semiconductor design and packaging advantages.
Samsung SDS collaborates with data centers
Samsung SDS, the ICT services provider within Samsung Group, will also participate in the collaboration, providing data center design, deployment, and management support to help businesses integrate OpenAI models into their internal systems. Samsung SDS will also become OpenAI's official distributor in South Korea, helping to promote enterprise-level applications like ChatGPT Enterprise and accelerating AI transformation for more Korean businesses.
More notably, Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI to createStargate Stargate's AI data center project, combined with its advanced data center technology, provides infrastructure support for global AI computing needs.
Concept of offshore floating data center
In addition to existing data center collaborations, Samsung Group will also explore innovative initiatives across its divisions. Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries plan to develop an offshore floating data center, utilizing seawater for natural cooling to reduce energy consumption while addressing limited land resources. While this design still presents technical challenges, if overcome, it could help reduce carbon emissions and enhance the sustainability of AI computing.
Samsung's internal AI applications expand
At the enterprise application level, Samsung also revealed that it will explore the introduction of ChatGPT within the group on a larger scale to promote workflow automation, document processing and cross-departmental collaboration, and further implement the so-called "AI-based office environment."
market observation
This collaboration not only solidifies Samsung's strategic position as the world's largest memory manufacturer, but also demonstrates its commitment to becoming a key supplier in the AI infrastructure race. With the explosive growth in computing power and memory demand for generative AI, Samsung will not only gain an advantage through hardware shipments, but also, through cross-sector collaborations between Samsung SDS, C&T, and Heavy Industries, enter data center construction and energy management, forming a vertically integrated ecosystem.
For OpenAI, the collaboration with Samsung means that while model training and inference scale continue to expand, it will be able to obtain more stable and efficient hardware and infrastructure support, laying the foundation for the future "Stargate" super data center project.
Overall, this is not only a semiconductor supply agreement, but is also likely to become a global strategic cooperation to promote the next stage of AI ecosystem development.
