Regarding the unveiling of the new foldable phone Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4, Chen Qimeng, deputy general manager of the Mobile and Information Business Division at Samsung Taiwan, said in an interview that in the past, it was believed that foldable phones could only attract a specific user group. However, after the sales of several products, it was found that the reachable user group was actually wider, so he is optimistic about the development of the foldable phone market this year.
Chen Qimeng said that early foldable screen mobile phones were indeed relatively expensive, and their actual application models were still not popular, so the market's view of such products at the time was indeed more inclined towards "high-priced high-quality products."
However, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 launched last year adjusted their prices to allow consumers to cooperate with telecom operators to lower the threshold for purchasing the phone, allowing the foldable screen phone to attract more consumer markets and even attract many male users to buy the Galaxy Z Flip 3, breaking the original estimate that this product is more likely to attract female consumers.
Therefore, Chen Qimeng believes that future promotions for foldable phones will utilize more flexible marketing strategies to allow different consumer groups to better understand the user experience of foldable phones. Furthermore, the launch of these two new models not only upgrades the hardware specifications of previous models but also addresses many of the previously criticized issues. This is expected to attract more existing foldable phone users to upgrade.
Looking at the current performance of the Taiwanese mobile phone market, Chen Qimeng said that last year's overall performance was indeed 10% lower in sales compared to the previous year, and sales performance in the first half of this year also decreased by 4% compared to the same period last year. However, Samsung still achieved double-digit growth in the Taiwanese mobile phone market last year. Even the sales performance in the first half of this year increased by 16% in sales amount and 14% in mobile phone sales compared to the same period last year. The reasons include the Galaxy S22 Ultra launched at the beginning of this year, which combines the S Pen with the user experience of the previous Galaxy Note, and the foldable screen mobile phone continues to attract different consumer groups.
Chen Qimeng expressed optimism about the future performance of the mobile phone market. With the launch of two new foldable-screen phones, he will expand communication on the product features of "why foldable phones" to allow more consumer groups to understand the application experience of foldable-screen phones.
In addition, Chen Qimeng emphasized that Samsung Taiwan dynamically adjusts its sales plans based on global purchase volumes, so it is not currently affected by supply shortages. He also stated that it has made preparations in advance for the launch of the new phone.
