In order to prevent drivers from using mobile phones while driving and thus causing traffic accidents, Calgary-based 4D Driving Technology Company has proposed a driving safety system called SafeHalo, which will prevent mobile phones within the driver's seat of the vehicle from making, receiving calls, and sending and receiving text messages.
The entire SafeHalo system consists of a control module installed on the vehicle's ODB-II diagnostic interface, a signal sending device placed inside the vehicle, and a dedicated app installed on the driver's mobile phone (supports iOS and Android platforms), and is connected via Bluetooth transmission.
During the entire operation of the system, the making and receiving of calls other than emergency calls including 911 will be blocked, and the sending and receiving of text messages will also be restricted. Mobile phone apps can only be used when the vehicle is stopped, thereby preventing drivers from using their phones while the vehicle is moving.
From a system perspective, SafeHalo is more like a system used by taxi companies to manage driver service quality, and by parents to limit their children's use of the family car, potentially preventing them from using their phone while driving and causing accidents. If a driver attempts to delete the SafeHalo system app or remove the control module, the system will automatically notify the company or parents.
The SafeHalo system is expected to be officially launched before the end of the year and will be available for subscription at an annual fee of less than $100 Canadian dollars.
