TechSpot website reported thatAnton Gorelkin, deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma Information Policy Committee, revealed that the Federal Ministry of Industry and Trade is developing a Russian-made game console to compete with the game console development dominated by the United States and Japan.
This Russian-made game console will use the Elbrus processor manufactured by the Moscow Central Corporation of Science and Technology (MCST), Russia, and will be equipped with the Ubuntu-based Aurora operating system or the Russian-made Linux branch operating system Alt Linux.
The Elbrus processor is a self-developed processor developed by Russian government agencies after the Prism Project, a Russian program designed to steal foreign secrets from the US government, occurred in 2014. Russia recognized that it was under threat from Western countries. It is mainly used by government agencies and military units. The long-term goal is to completely break away from reliance on the US for processor products.
Although the overall performance of the Elbrus processor is currently lower than players' expectations, and its production technology is not as good as current Intel, AMD or Arm architecture processors, Anton Gorelkin emphasized that this will promote the development of domestic games in Russia.
In addition to developing Russian-made game consoles, the Russian government also appears to be promoting a console called "Fog Play" that uses cloud streaming for gaming. It also comes with a set of Xbox-like controllers, and costs no more than $45. Users with high-performance computer equipment can "rent" their computing power to users of the "Fog Play" console, allowing them to play games through cloud streaming.
