Industry sources pointed outApple is expected to launch itsStandard iPhone 18The memory specifications have been significantly upgraded, with plans to use 12GB of LPDDR5X memory. Compared to the 8GB capacity of the iPhone 17 launched this year, the additional 4GB directly matches the memory capacity used in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max launched this year.
Sources indicate that Apple has asked Samsung, its main supplier of memory components, to increase the supply of LPDDR5X memory to meet the needs of the next-generation iPhone product line. The report further pointed out that Samsung's current LPDDR5X memory modules seem to only be available in 12GB and 16GB capacity options, which may be one of the reasons why the standard iPhone 18 jumped directly from 8GB to 12GB.
The main purpose of this move is believed to be to enable standard iPhones to run more complex AI models smoothly on-device.
It's generally accepted that 8GB of RAM is insufficient for many advanced on-device AI computations. Therefore, increasing the standard iPhone's memory to 12GB will help AI features like Apple Intelligence achieve better performance and a better experience across more devices.
This news also echoes previous rumors that Apple may adjust the iPhone product release schedule starting in 2026. The report stated that Apple plans to maintain the release time of Pro models and the possible Fold models in the fall of 2026, but the standard iPhone 18 may be delayed until spring 2027.
If this strategy is true, increasing the memory capacity of the standard model to 12GB, the same as the current Pro model, seems to be a relatively reasonable upgrade plan.
