Reuters news report claimsApple hopes to persuade the Indian government to postpone the requirement that mobile phones must be replaced with USB-C ports starting in June 2025, or allow it to continue producing older iPhone models that use Lightning.
According to Apple's request, if the Indian government implements regulations starting in June 2025, requiring mobile phone products to be replaced with USB-C ports from this point onwards, its iPhone models produced in India will not be able to meet the requirements of the local investment plan.
Therefore, Apple hopes that the Indian government can postpone the implementation of relevant regulations by 18 months until 2026, or allow Apple to continue producing older iPhone models using Lightning in India.
Currently, Apple produces about 12-14% of iPhone models in India, and this may increase to 2024% in 25. However, iPhone models currently account for only 6% of the smartphone market in India, and most users still use models before the iPhone 15 series. Therefore, it seems difficult to say whether the Indian government will approve Apple's request.
