The Information reported thatMeta has canceled its long-rumored mixed reality headset, which was expected to compete with Apple Vision Pro.
This visual headset, previously known as "La Jolla," was originally scheduled to be launched in 2027 and positioned as a high-end mixed reality visual headset, but Meta CEO Mark Zuckberg ordered the development to be halted during a product review meeting.
One of the reasons for stopping development was that the original development team hoped to keep the price of this product below US$1000, but the cost of key components such as micro OLED display panels was difficult to lower, so this product had to be sold at a higher price.
Another reason is that the market has lower price expectations for such products. Therefore, when Apple's Vision Pro was priced at $3499, it obviously only attracted a small number of consumers, and many even chose to sell after trying it. At the same time, Meta's previously launched Quest Pro was priced at $1499, resulting in overall sales significantly lower than the later launched Quest 3.
Meta hasn't given up on developing virtual or mixed reality headsets, but it may no longer focus on high-end products. The rumored Quest 4 or a more affordable virtual reality headset may be next.Quest 3SAttract more market support.
In addition, Meta has recently announced thatHorizon OS software technologyAuthorizing more third-party hardware manufacturers will enable them to create more virtual vision head-mounted devices, thereby expanding the market size of their virtual vision applications and creating greater profit potential.
