The Core X V2 utilizes a similar mechanical design to previous generations, accommodating discrete desktop graphics cards, including NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon series graphics cards, and connects to laptops or host devices via a single Thunderbolt 5 cable. While Thunderbolt 4 offers up to twice the data transfer bandwidth of its predecessor, the upgraded Thunderbolt 5 specification still roughly matches the performance of PCIe Gen 3 x8, and still falls short of the full bandwidth of a direct connection to a desktop graphics card.
Despite this, the Core X V2 still offers considerable flexibility, particularly for mainstream thin and light laptops or popular handheld gaming devices, providing enhanced GPU computing power for scenarios requiring high-performance gaming, video editing, or AI training.
Razer's external graphics expansion box product line dates back to the first-generation Core expansion box, launched alongside the Blade Stealth laptop in 2016. This was followed by the Core X in 2018, and the RGB-lit Core X Chroma in 2019. The Core X V2 builds on the Core X Chroma's success, featuring a new generation Thunderbolt interface.
As devices supporting Thunderbolt 5 gradually come out, the market for external graphics card expansion boxes is heating up again. Earlier this year, during the CES 2025 exhibition, ASUS has already demonstratedXG Mobile GC5, a Thunderbolt 34-based external graphics card expansion solution, which means that such products will once again become auxiliary options for high-performance mobile computing.
The Razer Core X V2 has not yet announced a specific release date, but the suggested retail price has been confirmed to be US$350. It is expected to be available in the near future through Razer's official website and retail channels.
