Google recently opened pre-orders for its new mid-range Pixel 10a on its official website, and I quickly got my hands on the "Strawberry Pink" color option, which is only available in the 256GB version.

▲The Pixel 10a "Strawberry Pink" color is only available in the 256GB version.

While maintaining the same price as its predecessor, the Pixel 9a (starting at NT$16490 in Taiwan), the Pixel 10a not only improved many hardware specifications but also brought significant breakthroughs in software ecosystem and AI applications.

▲The Pixel 10a box includes the phone itself, and all accessories: SIM card ejector tool, USB-C cable, and instruction manual.

The pleasing strawberry pink color scheme and noticeable upgrades in screen quality and durability are all noteworthy.

Upon actually handling the Pixel 10a in Strawberry Pink, the soft pink tone, combined with the smooth aluminum alloy frame and composite material back cover, gives it a youthful and sophisticated feel. What impressed me most was the flatter camera module on the back, allowing it to be placed flat on a table; at the same time, the phone maintains IP68 dust and water resistance and a lightweight feel of approximately 183 grams.

Once the screen is lit up, the upgrades to this 6.3-inch Acta OLED screen are immediately apparent. The peak brightness of the screen has been increased to 3000 nits (compared to 2700 nits in the previous generation), significantly improving the reading experience in bright outdoor light. In addition, the screen glass has finally said goodbye to the Gorilla Glass 3 that has been used for many years and has been replaced with the more scratch-resistant and drop-resistant Gorilla Glass 7i.

▲The screen remains at 6.3 inches, but HDR and peak brightness have been improved, and the screen is now protected by more scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

Although both feature a 6.3-inch screen, the Pixel 10a is slightly smaller than the Pixel 9a, so their protective cases and accessories are not interchangeable.

Specifications comparison with Pixel 9a and Pixel 10: A "complete" version with more features at the same price.

In terms of specifications and positioning, if you compare the Pixel 10a with its predecessor, the Pixel 9a, and the higher-end Pixel 10, you will find that its product positioning strategy is very accurate.

Compared to the Pixel 9a, the Pixel 10a, while also using the Tensor G4 processor, feels more like a "complete" version that addresses all the pain points. Besides the aforementioned brighter screen and harder protective glass, the Pixel 10a significantly boosts wired fast charging from 23W to 45W (charging to 50% in about 30 minutes), and wireless charging is slightly improved to 10W. It also adds the previously flagship-exclusive satellite SOS emergency call function. However, it doesn't follow the Pixel 10 series in adding the Pixelsnap magnetic interface, thus preventing the use of corresponding Pixelsnap or Apple MagSafe accessories.

Compared to the higher-end Pixel 10, the Pixel 10a makes some trade-offs in terms of extreme computing performance or top-of-the-line camera modules (the Pixel 10a retains a 4800MP main lens and a 1300MP ultra-wide-angle lens), but retains its core AI processing capabilities and smooth daily user experience. For users who don't need top-of-the-line hardware but want to experience the full Google ecosystem, it's a highly cost-effective choice.

At first glance, the Pixel 10a and Pixel 9a don't seem to be very different, but there are still quite a few differences in the details.

Breaking down system barriers: Adding support for AirDrop protocol file transfer

The most impressive highlight of this hands-on experience is Google's significant step forward in cross-device connectivity. The Pixel 10a also joins the Pixel 10 series in supporting file transfer with Apple devices via the AirDrop protocol.

Previously, transferring high-quality photos or large files between Android and iOS users often relied on third-party communication software or cloud storage. Now, with this new feature, the Pixel 10a can also seamlessly transfer files directly with iPhones or Macs. This will be much more convenient for users in a hybrid device ecosystem, or those who frequently need to share photos with friends who have iPhones, and it also greatly increases the practicality of this mid-range phone.

Enhanced artificial intelligence in Gemini, making it a more accessible "AI phone".

In addition to the hardware upgrades, the Pixel 10a further enhances the Gemini AI application capabilities on the software level and features the Gemini Nano model, making it truly Google's most entry-level "AI phone" to date.

▲The camera specifications of the Pixel 10a are basically the same as those of the Pixel 9a, but the Pixel 10a also includes the Gemini AI application feature, which was previously only available on the Pixel 10 series.

Leveraging its powerful AI computing capabilities, the Pixel 10a incorporates numerous practical features in its camera app: including "Camera Coach," a first for the A series, which uses the Gemini AI model to analyze scenes in real time and provide composition suggestions, and "Macro Focus," a feature missing from its predecessor.

Furthermore, the "Auto Best Take" feature, previously exclusive to flagship phones, is fully integrated, giving this phone a flagship-level intelligent shooting experience. In terms of audio, the Pixel 10a also achieves noise reduction effects typically found only on flagship phones through AI.

summary

Overall, the Pixel 10a in Strawberry Pink is not only visually striking, but its internal upgrades are also substantial. It addresses the pain points of the Pixel A series in terms of screen brightness and charging speed, and redefines the standard for mid-range phones with its transfer capabilities that break the barriers of Apple's AirDrop and its comprehensively enhanced Gemini AI applications. For consumers who want a phone that will last for years and also want to experience the latest AI technology, the Pixel 10a is definitely a highly competitive option.
