In February this year, based on Snapdragon brand technology, a portfolio of industrial IoT applications was proposed.New brand "Dragonwing"Later, Qualcomm announced the new Dragonwing Q-6690 processor, touted as the world's first enterprise-class mobile processor with built-in ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID functionality, which is expected to bring new application possibilities to industries such as retail, logistics, and manufacturing.
Integrating RFID, AI, and next-generation connectivity
The Dragonwing Q-6690's greatest breakthrough lies in integrating RFID reading capabilities, which previously required additional modules, directly into the processor. This allows terminal devices to perform applications such as access control, asset tracking, inventory management, and product verification in a smaller and more efficient manner. This not only reduces equipment design and maintenance costs, but also allows businesses to more quickly implement various contactless, real-time digital transformation solutions.
In addition to RFID, this processor also supports 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and UWB ultra-wideband functions, and combined with built-in AI capabilities, it can provide smarter close-range interaction and analysis capabilities on edge computing devices.
Software can be configured and upgraded to extend product life cycle
Qualcomm also emphasized that the Q-6690 uses a software-configurable feature pack design, allowing OEMs to select computing performance, multimedia support, or peripheral interface configurations based on their needs. Functionality can also be expanded through OTA upgrades without redesigning the hardware.
This modular approach not only shortens product time to market, but also extends the life cycle of hardware equipment and reduces certification and maintenance costs.
Industry partners responded
Several companies have already announced their adoption of the Dragonwing Q-6690, including Zebra, Honeywell, Urovo, HMD Secure, and CipherLab. Commercial devices equipped with this new processor are expected to be available within the next few months.
Hervé D'Halluin, Head of RFID and Tracking Solutions at Decathlon, stated that this platform will further enhance retail efficiency and product traceability, while also contributing to sustainable development goals. Aileen Ryan, CEO of the RAIN Alliance, which promotes the widespread application of RAIN RFID technology, further stated that the launch of the Dragonwing Q-6690 will mark "the beginning of a structural shift in the industry," expected to further popularize RFID technology and drive the development of digital product passports, automated checkout, the circular economy, and the Internet of Things.
Qualcomm's corporate strategic layout
Qualcomm has a long history of developing mobile processors and wireless technologies, and its Snapdragon-branded products meet the computing and connectivity needs of the consumer market. With the Dragonwing Q-6690, Qualcomm is further penetrating into enterprise and industrial applications, emphasizing that it will provide the platform foundation for a new wave of smart retail and smart factories.
