Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, its mobile computing platform targeted at entry-to-mid-range devices. This minor upgrade is targeted at budget smartphones and devices. Compared to the previous-generation Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, this update delivers approximately 7% faster CPU and GPU performance, along with support for higher-resolution displays and enhanced low-light imaging.
A slight performance upgrade, with a maximum operating clock speed of 2.7GHz
The Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 is equipped with a new-generation Kryo CPU with a peak operating clock of up to 2.7GHz, a slight increase from the previous generation's operating clock of 2.5GHz. It is also paired with an Adreno GPU that provides smoother graphics performance to meet the needs of gaming and multimedia use.
Although the overall performance improvement is limited, it is enough to further upgrade the user experience for a product positioned at the entry and mid-range markets.
Support for higher resolution and refresh rate screens
Regarding displays, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 now supports WFHD+ (2900 x 1300) resolution and 144Hz refresh rate screen specifications, meaning that future entry-level devices will also enjoy more detailed and smooth display effects. This upgrade will further enhance the audio-visual entertainment and gaming experience, gradually narrowing the gap between affordable entry-level devices and mid-range and high-end models.
Decentralization of low-light image optimization technology
In addition, Qualcomm has also brought its Low Light Vision low-light image enhancement technology, originally limited to high-end Snapdragon mobile computing platforms, to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, allowing users to obtain clearer image quality when recording or shooting in dim environments.
The Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 also supports cameras with specifications of up to 2 million pixels, which means that the shooting capabilities of entry-level mobile phones will be further improved.
AI functions and fast charging continue to be retained
The Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 inherits many of the AI features of its predecessor, including instant multi-language translation and transcription. It also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology, which can charge the battery from 5% to 0% in just 50 minutes, improving convenience in daily use.
Market application and subsequent observation
Qualcomm has not yet announced which mobile phone brands will be the first to adopt the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, but considering that brands such as Honor and vivo have already used the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 series processors in their models, the market expects these brands to be the first to adopt them.
While this upgrade isn't significant, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 underscores Qualcomm's steady and steady approach to the mid-range market. By gradually improving performance, display, and imaging technology, future entry-level smartphones are expected to offer a user experience closer to mid-range and high-end offerings, further expanding consumer choice in the affordable market.
