In addition to announcing the new versions of Director 365, PowerDirector 18, and PhotoDirector 11, CyberLink also revealed in an Easter egg that it will release a PowerDirector for iOS devices by the end of this year, and has confirmed a Mac version by the end of 2020, allowing more Apple product users to edit videos with the easy-to-use PowerDirector.
CyberLink does not deny that it has indeed considered the relatively small number of Apple product users in the past. In addition, iOS devices and Mac series models already have built-in iMovie video editing software, and there are many similar third-party apps being released. Therefore, it has always been on the sidelines regarding the development of Apple devices in the past.
The decision to release PowerDirector for iOS and Mac devices this year was made because, on the one hand, there are more and more users creating videos on iPhone or Mac, and they are also very willing to use the subscription model. On the other hand, the proportion of amateur video creation is increasing, so the decision was made to bring PowerDirector, which has mostly focused on the Windows PC platform in the past, to the iOS and Mac platforms.
The usage model initially planned will mainly be subscription-based, and a single-unit purchase model has not yet been planned. CyberLink stated that since the subscription system was implemented last year, although some groups still prefer single-unit purchases, as many as 70% of users in Taiwan are willing to subscribe for a fee, and even 60% of users in overseas markets are willing to pay for it. Many factors are due to the subsequent value-added content and continuous version updates. The overall calculation is relatively cost-effective. Therefore, the iOS and Mac platform versions are currently only available on a subscription basis.
However, CyberLink stated that future decisions will depend on market demand, so it's not certain to be a subscription-only offering. Furthermore, considering users with multiple platforms may switch between devices during the creative process depending on usage scenarios, subscription plans may be further adjusted.
However, judging from the current settings, it is indeed necessary to pay a subscription fee for each platform for usage needs. Some of the content is applicable to paying for DTS sound technology licenses. Otherwise, it is necessary to follow the Microsoft or Adobe licensing model, that is, to absorb the intermediate repeated licensing fees by itself, or to formulate a more appropriate licensing model.
As for the differences in platform usage, CyberLink also revealed that there are indeed many differences in the user interface, operation mode, and even file structure and encoding methods of different platforms. Therefore, the iOS and Mac platform versions are almost rebuilt from the ground up, but basically, the creative content can still be compatible with different platform versions. In other words, users can perform early creation on an iPhone and complete post-production on a Windows PC with higher computing performance.
In addition, PowerDirector for iOS and Mac platforms will also import API resources such as Metal and Core ML, so it can also use graphics cards for hardware acceleration, or use the artificial intelligence computing framework of Apple's operating system to speed up special effects processing efficiency, allowing users to have richer convenience than iMovie, while not being as overly professional as the Final Cut series of software, and the price is relatively high.
