Faced with escalating tariffs and pressure from the Trump administration regarding "Made in America," Apple has once again resorted to its tried-and-true strategy of testing the waters with niche products. This time, the company chosen to shoulder the political responsibility is...The Mac mini now features an M4 processor and a more compact design..
According to the Wall Street JournalReportApple COO Sabih Khan confirmed that some Mac mini assembly will "return to the United States" in the future. This new production line will be located at Foxconn's factory in Houston, Texas, and is expected to officially start operations by the end of this year, with a target capacity of "several thousand units" per week.
Foxconn's Houston plant undergoes major renovation to supply the US domestic market.
To prepare for the production of the Mac mini in the United States, Foxconn is currently converting a building in its Houston plant that was originally used as a warehouse into a modern production line covering 20.4 square meters.
However, this does not mean that the Asian supply chain will be completely replaced. Sabih Khan clearly stated that the Mac mini produced on this US production line will be exclusively supplied to the US domestic market, while the Asian production lines (such as those in mainland China and Vietnam) will continue to operate, responsible for meeting export demand from Asia and other parts of the world.
Sabih Khan also emphasized that this production line transfer plan is a concrete manifestation of Apple's commitment to "invest $600 billion in the United States by August 2029".
Why the Mac mini? A perfect pilot project for a "niche yet high-profile" approach.
Why did Apple choose to relocate the production line for the Mac mini from its vast product empire? The answer is quite practical: because its sales volume is small enough that the risk is completely manageable.
According to a report by market research firm CIRP, the Mac mini accounted for only about 5% of total global Mac sales last year. Although the popularity and sales of this product have rebounded significantly after it was upgraded to an M4/M4 Pro processor at the end of 2024 and its size was greatly reduced, it still belongs to the relatively niche desktop market.
Using niche products to address political pressure has almost become standard operating procedure for Apple. Looking back to 2019, during Trump's first term, Apple repurposed its Mac Pro production line, which was also a niche product with a high price tag.Move back to Texas, USAChoosing the Mac mini this time not only avoids some import tariffs without affecting the efficiency of the supply chains of cash cows like the iPhone and iPad, but also serves as an excellent political public relations campaign.
Precise political timing and TSMC's support
The timing of this announcement is also highly politically calculated.
Apple's decision to release this information on the eve of Trump's 2026 State of the Union address (February 24th) clearly indicates its intention to curry favor with the White House. Furthermore, the Wall Street Journal also reported that Apple's plans to promote "American chip manufacturing" are accelerating, including a projected purchase of over 2 million chips from TSMC's Arizona plant. These moves are all aimed at accumulating leverage in future tariff negotiations.
