In the Sony 6 Business Segment Report and Fireside Chat held in June this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki NishinoconfirmAMD is actively developing its next-generation PlayStation 6 console, which has become one of its most important core projects. However, the company has not disclosed specific hardware specifications or a release date. The YouTube channel "Moore's Law is Dead" cited an internal AMD briefing from 2023, stating that the PlayStation 6's 3D graphics processing performance will be three times that of the PlayStation 5, but the console's price may remain at $499.
Sony's current market strategy likely focuses on reducing power consumption and controlling costs, attempting to strike the optimal balance between hardware performance and price. Reports indicate that the PlayStation 6 will boast approximately three times the rasterization performance of the PlayStation 5 and approximately two times the performance of the PlayStation 5 Pro, expected to deliver a higher-quality visual experience and real-time computing performance for next-generation games.
Furthermore, Sony plans to maintain compatibility with both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, continuing its strategy of seamless cross-generational content integration and further expanding the PlayStation 6's initial game lineup. If the price remains at $499 as leaked, it will mirror the PlayStation 4's success with affordable pricing, further differentiating itself from competitors.
In addition, Sony may also release a handheld device at the same time as the PlayStation 6, which supports micro SD and M.2 SSD storage expansion, and has functions such as a touch screen, dual microphones, vibration feedback function, and support for USB-C video output. The overall design direction seems to be aimed at the current high-end gaming handheld market such as ROG Ally X, with an expected price between US$400 and US$500.
The handheld's expandability and audio/video transmission capabilities may indicate Sony's positioning it as more than just a PS Remote Play device, capable of running games independently or streaming games from the cloud, offering a more complete mobile entertainment experience. However, it's unclear whether this handheld utilizes the same operating environment as the PlayStation console or simply serves as an accessory for content streaming.
As for the release time, the "Moore's Law is Dead" channel pointed out that Sony will start mass production of PlayStation 2027 and handheld consoles as early as mid-6, and may officially launch the new consoles between autumn 2027 and early 2028. This means that the new consoles will be on the market about 5 to 7 years later than the PlayStation 8, which is in line with Sony's previous schedule for game console generation replacements.
All information has not yet been officially confirmed by Sony, and the source cited is only early internal briefing materials. Therefore, as product design and related market strategies are adjusted, the final specifications, details and prices are still subject to change.
