Just like the Pixel series launched in the past with the name suffix "a" to launch affordable models, claiming that although the hardware specifications are relatively simple, it is not enough to affect the experience of using Google services. This year, Google also announced the launch of theNew Pixel 6a, is expected to be officially launched on July 7, and has alreadyOpen for bookingThis time, I also obtained a commercially available model in advance to confirm the actual usage experience of this affordable model.

Similar to the Pixel 6 series launched last year, Google also uses the Tensor processor developed in cooperation with Samsung in the Pixel 6a, so the overall computing performance is basically the same. The main differences are in the design of the screen, battery, charging, camera, etc.

From an overall appearance perspective, the Pixel 6a shares the same design language as the Pixel 6 series, with even the body maintaining an aluminum alloy frame. However, the screen size has been reduced to 6.1 inches, boasting a Full HD+ resolution. The refresh rate has been reduced from 90Hz to 60Hz, and the screen surface is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3, rather than the Gorilla Glass Victus specification used in the Pixel 6 series. As a result, the surface is less scratch-resistant, but still offers a certain level of protection.

Other differences include a reduction in memory from 6GB in the Pixel 8 to 6GB, a battery capacity reduced to 4410mAh, the removal of wireless charging, and wired fast charging, which only offers 18W specifications. The 3.5mm wired headphone jack has also been removed, but the eSIM function is still retained. In addition, the back cover of the body has been changed to a heat-pressed 3D composite material instead of being made of glass.

As for the camera, the telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom has been removed, leaving only a 1200-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 1200-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 114-degree shooting angle. The telephoto shooting part uses software calculation correction and interpolation to make the digital zoom shooting effect more natural and clear.

▲ In terms of camera, the telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom is cancelled, leaving only the 1200-megapixel wide-angle lens and the 1200-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 114-degree shooting angle.

Perhaps due to the removal of the telephoto lens, the Pixel 6a's main camera module isn't as prominent as the Pixel 6 series, but rather feels just right and acceptable. The video camera boasts an 84-degree field of view and 800 megapixels.

As for photography, the Pixel 6a still features Night Sight, thanks to Google's advanced algorithms. However, since it lacks the stacked 6-megapixel lens design of the Pixel 5000 series, it lacks the dynamic portrait mode. However, the overall user experience isn't significantly affected, and it generally meets most user needs.

Actual unboxing

Compared to the Pixel 6 series, which has cancelled the box design of the included charger, the Pixel 6a is obviously smaller in box design, but the box still comes with a USB-A to USB-C accessory, a dual USB-C cable and an eject pin.

As for the outside of the box, you can also see the color of the Pixel 6a body directly, and the box and the screen surface are also glued with paper.

summary

The overall design of the Pixel 6a is more streamlined, and the general computing performance is not affected. Only the hardware design has been simplified. Therefore, the user experience will be somewhat different, but the production cost can be relatively reduced.

▲Using software power to provide a consistent user experience across multiple mobile phones

With the help of software and network collaborative computing, the Pixel 6a can still provide a user experience similar to the Pixel 6 series in most cases, which also reflects Google's desire to reduce the usage gap between different hardware specifications under the same software and network collaborative design.

This kind of design is exactly the idea behind the design of models such as the Pixel 6a, which means that users can have the same experience, or at least a similar experience, on Android phones with different hardware specifications.
