Perplexity, facing stiff competition in the AI search space, recently announced a partnership with Samsung to bring its AI search engine to smart TV platforms. Starting today, users of 2025 Samsung TVs can download and use the TV app, with 2023 and 2024 models to receive support via an over-the-air (OTA) update later this year.
From mobile phones to TVs: Cross-border extension of search experience
This TV version of the app allows users to search by typing or voice input, and Perplexity also offers12-month free subscription to the Pro plan, users only need to scan the QR Code displayed in the App to redeem.
As a pioneer in AI search, Perplexity offered a deeper web search experience than Google at the time, long before competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic added search capabilities to their chatbots. However, with Google fully committed to its "AI Mode" search feature, market competition has become increasingly fierce.
Shadows beneath the halo: Copyright disputes and legal challenges
Despite its noteworthy technological innovations, Perplexity has recently been mired in legal disputes, including the following:
• In August, Cloudflare accused it of illegally crawling website data
• In the same month, it was sued by two major Japanese media groups for copyright infringement, accusing it of not only stealing information but also making false attributions.
• In September, the authoritative dictionary Merriam-Webster sued the company again, also for copyright infringement.
These controversies cast a shadow over this collaboration, leading the industry to remain cautious about this "unique partnership." In the rapidly developing AI industry, how Perplexity balances innovation and compliance will be crucial to its success in the competition.
