OPPO earlier demonstrated its augmented reality glasses at the INNO DAY Future Technology Conference held in Shenzhen, which is a personal network device compatible with 5G networking. It also responded to recent rumors that it is preparing to build its own processor called "M1".
Prior to this, OPPO had actually revealed its intention to expand into markets beyond mobile phones. At the INNO DAY Future Technology Conference held in Shenzhen, OPPO CEO Chen Mingyong further stated that in the future, OPPO will not only be a mobile phone manufacturer, but will also focus on artificial intelligence, 5G, and smart devices, and will continue to develop the direction of the Internet of Things.
Chen Mingyong stated that future products will develop towards personal use scenarios, vertical integration scenarios, and integrated situational scenarios. Personal scenarios will further deepen the integration and application of mobile phones, smart wearables such as watches, and headphones, while vertical integration scenarios will include 5G personal network devices, thereby allowing more devices besides personal use to connect to the Internet, such as allowing home devices to connect to the Internet, further extending the demand for personal network applications. Therefore, at this INNO DAY Future Technology Conference, OPPO also simultaneously demonstrated its first personal 5G network device for personal use.
The newly launched augmented reality glasses are OPPO's first product in the development of integrated situational scenarios. They integrate various sensor components to identify surrounding environmental information, and use SLAM algorithms to quickly scan and build models. At the same time, they cooperate with lenses to capture real-world scene information, allowing augmented reality objects to be smoothly attached to the scene seen by the human eye. In addition, they also support interactive modes such as 3D surround sound, gestures and voice recognition.
OPPO will also further collaborate with third-party augmented reality content, gaming, and service providers on software, emphasizing a lighter, less weighty wearing experience. According to OPPO, its augmented reality glasses will be commercially available in the first quarter of 2020, but the actual price and release date have not yet been announced.
In addition, regarding the previous news that OPPO was preparing to build a self-made processor called "M1", Liu Chang, Vice President of OPPO and Director of the Research Institute, said in an interview after the meeting that in addition to confirming that he was indeed working on building this self-made processor, he also said that this processor will be used in its products in the future, but did not disclose specific details.
The control chip previously used for VOOC flash charging technology was actually a product developed by OPPO itself, and it also plans to open it up for external licensing. The confirmation of investing in the development of its own processor "M1" further emphasizes OPPO's own technical capabilities in independent research and development of chip products.
According to Liu Chang, OPPO must expand its product research and development capabilities to the chip product level so that it can have greater market competitiveness. At the same time, it can have a higher voice in the process of cooperation with chip suppliers and thereby obtain higher technical resources.
OPPO said that over the next three years it will invest 500 billion yuan (about US$70 billion) in research and development funds to build a "technological moat" and gain more technological development advantages in the market.
