At last year's Google Next'24 event, OPPOExplainOPPO will introduce the Gemini 1.0 and Gemini 1.5 AI models into its phones, and subsequent phones like the Find X8 Pro will also feature Google AI technology. At the Google Next'25 event, OPPO Research Institute Director Liao Jinsong stated that the company will continue its in-depth collaboration with Google and will further apply these new technologies to future OPPO phones.
More Google technologies will be used in OPPO's future products
Liao Jinsong explained that compared to the domestic usage environment in the Chinese market, which mainly cooperates with Alibaba, ByteDance, and even DeepSeek on large-scale natural language models, in addition to independently developed artificial intelligence technology, in the international market, it cooperates with Google, Amazon and other companies on cloud platform artificial intelligence technology, and on the mobile side, it further cooperates with Google to provide technology, and also develops its own artificial intelligence.
In addition to choosing to collaborate with different companies based on factors such as the network environment, Liao Jinsong also explained that different AI technologies will be introduced to meet the needs and cultural differences of users in different countries and regions. However, the AI technology used on mobile phones will be primarily based on Google Gemini, and the AI technology behind cloud services will vary by region due to the multi-cloud architecture, but the overall differences will not be too significant.
OPPO is currently evaluating whether to upgrade the current model version to 2.0 or adopt the newer version 2.5. It will also study how to apply new features such as Imagen 3 and Veo 2 announced by Google to its mobile products to enhance the user experience on mobile phones.
Liao Jinsong foresees the impact of AI on mobile phones, similar to the dramatic shift in user experience from feature phones to smartphones. AI will also significantly enhance the current mobile experience. From using AI to summarize key text, alter image details, and remove pedestrians and reflections from glass, smartphones will become more like personal assistants, integrating with third-party apps to more easily accomplish tasks. The device could even become an intelligent entity that proactively assists users with various tasks.
Even if we cooperate with Google, we will still need to make adjustments before using its technical resources.
Regarding the current development of artificial intelligence applications, Liao Jinsong believes that the training cost of artificial intelligence models still requires a certain amount of investment, but the inference operation after training can indeed significantly reduce the execution cost through distillation and optimization.
Liao Jinsong also believes that we are still a long way from achieving general artificial intelligence (AGI). Therefore, the most common approach is to deploy specialized AI models for different application needs. This is why OPPO is currently focusing on the development of different AI models, as different use cases often require specialized AI models for optimal processing.
Although processing methods such as distillation and fine-tuning will indeed reduce overall performance and accuracy, they will result in faster execution response speeds. Therefore, Liao Jinsong believes that with the combination of data correction and OPPO's own artificial intelligence technology adjustments, the execution results can still be maintained correct.
As for how to prevent hallucinations caused by artificial intelligence, Liao Jinsong explained that they will use data optimization, fine-tuning, and product design to avoid hallucinations caused by artificial intelligence operations. Even though Google has proposed methods to improve hallucinations in its artificial intelligence model design, OPPO will not directly use them due to the partnership. Instead, it will ensure the correct operation of the model through relevant solutions and fine-tuning designs.
OnePlus will share more technical resources with realme and use artificial intelligence to maintain OnePlus's "Never Settle" spirit.
Compared to vivo, which has also invested in its own artificial intelligence technology, although OPPO has had a certain relationship with it in the past, the two parties have now become independent systems. Therefore, there will be no cross-integration in the application of artificial intelligence technology. Instead, more artificial intelligence technologies will be shared with realme.
OnePlus, currently integrated into the OPPO ecosystem, will also leverage AI technology to enhance the user experience. Liao Jinsong anticipates that this integration with AI will provide a more refined user experience, enabling OnePlus to maintain its "Never Settle" brand spirit in the AI era.
