Opinion: Over-reliance on artificial intelligence could undermine critical thinking

Although Microsoft has proposed many artificial intelligence technology application solutions and has also introduced Copilot technology with multiple partners to improve manpower shortages and enhance work efficiency, it recently collaborated with Carnegie Mellon University toConduct research togetherIn a separate report, Microsoft warned that over-reliance on artificial intelligence could undermine critical thinking.

The study analyzed the actual application of artificial intelligence in the workplace and the workers' trust in using this technology. It also compared the performance differences between workers who rely on artificial intelligence and those who do not.

The results show that workers who frequently rely on AI and have extremely high trust in the results produced by AI find it more difficult to engage in critical thinking than workers who do not rely on AI. On the contrary, workers who do not rely on AI are more able to use their own knowledge and experience to confirm whether the results produced by AI are correct, allowing AI to produce more accurate results through subsequent corrections.

Microsoft researchers believe that over-reliance on AI technology can lead to workers becoming mechanized, affecting their daily judgment and cognitive abilities, and making it impossible to respond appropriately to unexpected situations. Workers who frequently question the results of AI can maintain cognitive acuity by repeatedly verifying the correctness of these results, thereby improving the effectiveness of AI applications.

Similar situations actually occurred before the popularization of search engine applications. Many people would extremely trust the results presented in the search results, and would not conduct multiple verifications to confirm whether the content listed in the search results was correct. Some even over-trusted the "lazy packages" of information circulating on the Internet, resulting in their unquestionable belief in the content presented in the search results.

At present, as artificial intelligence technology begins to be widely used in various life scenarios, news content begins to be automatically generated and summarized by artificial intelligence. Companies including Google and Microsoft have also begun to use artificial intelligence technology in search engine services, allowing users to more conveniently summarize and read the key points of the news content they are looking for.

However, current artificial intelligence still cannot clearly determine which news content is factual reporting, market analysis, or opinion pieces. Therefore, the actual summary results may seriously affect the real content. This also highlights that as artificial intelligence technology becomes increasingly popular, it is still important to maintain personal cognitive judgment. In fact, we should even improve our ability to identify facts, rather than leaving all results to artificial intelligence.

Currently, technology companies including Microsoft, NVIDIA, Tesla, and Google all advocate the development and application of artificial intelligence technology. However, there are also more and more views calling for avoiding over-reliance on artificial intelligence technology, so as to avoid losing one's original dialectical and recognition abilities while enjoying its convenience. Instead, artificial intelligence should be regarded as an auxiliary tool, rather than relying entirely on it.
