OpenAI announced that it has signed a $2 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense to develop advanced artificial intelligence prototype capabilities to meet critical national security protection needs in military and enterprise fields.
The collaboration is expected to be completed in July 2026. OpenAI stated in its official blog that the collaboration includes improving healthcare services provided to military personnel and their families, simplifying the viewing of project and procurement data, and enhancing proactive network defense effectiveness. All application projects will comply with OpenAI's usage policies and guidelines.
This collaboration is based on the "OpenAI for Government" project, a collaboration between OpenAI and the US government. The goal is to use artificial intelligence tools to improve the work efficiency of US civil servants, so that they can serve the public interest and reduce cumbersome procedures and paperwork, making it easier for civil servants to serve the American people.
The "OpenAI for Government" project will integrate OpenAI's existing work providing technology to the U.S. government, including previously announced clients and partners, as well as the ChatGPT Gov product service provided to government agencies. It will also maintain existing partnerships with U.S. National Laboratories, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the U.S. Treasury Department, and incorporate these partnerships into the "OpenAI for Government" project.
In the "OpenAI for Government" project, OpenAI stated that it will provide the most effective artificial intelligence models within the scope of security and compliance to the U.S. federal, state, and local governments, including through models such as ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Gov. It will also provide customized models for national security and insights into future development trends to help the government plan ahead and predict new ways to use OpenAI tools for its important work.
