The Information website reportedIt pointed out that OpenAI's current annual revenue has exceeded US$13 billion, significantly exceeding last year's revenue of only US$2800 million.
The significant increase in revenue is due to the availability of OpenAI's own ChatGPT Plus at a relatively cheaper price, as well as cooperation with Microsoft, which allows enterprise users to access OpenAI's GPT-4, CodeX, and Dall-E services directly on the Azure cloud platform.
If we compare it with fine-tuning OpenAI's large natural language model GPT-3.5, it costs about US$4-12 per time and takes 1-1.5 hours to fine-tune 100 million tokens. The same processing requirements may cost 3-8 times the price on AWS services. OpenAI can even use only 8 sets of GPUs for fine-tuning during the fine-tuning process, which naturally attracts a large number of users to use its services.
However, considering that the current annual revenue is more than $13 billion and the average monthly revenue is more than $1 million, OpenAI has not disclosed the operating costs behind it and the net profit after deducting the costs.
Previous reports have indicated that OpenAI's daily operating costs are as high as $70, and last year it accumulated losses of up to $5.4 million. Therefore, if OpenAI still fails to find a sufficient revenue model,Bankruptcy could occur as early as the end of 2024.
Judging from the companies currently implementing large-scale natural language models, Microsoft's artificial intelligence programming tool GitHub Copilot loses an average of $20 per user per month, with the maximum loss reaching $80. Assuming that the service has 150 million users per month, Microsoft loses at least $3000 million per month on this service, and the accumulated losses over a year are at least $3 million.
These amounts only represent the potential losses incurred by GitHub Copilot. Microsoft is currently promoting more than just these artificial intelligence application services, including automatically generated artificial intelligence services integrated with Bing search.
However, OpenAI's current strategy of attracting users with low prices has proven successful, particularly among new entrepreneurs with limited capital, thereby increasing revenue potential. Furthermore, OpenAI is also actively raising funds, having previously stated its goal of raising $1000 billion over the next few years to further advance general-purpose artificial intelligence technology.
As for OpenAI's current market valuation, it has increased from US$270 billion to around US$290 billion, an increase of approximately US$800-900 billion.
