OpenAI has announced the launch of ChatGPT Go, a new, low-cost subscription plan in India. At just 390 rupees (approximately $4.6 USD) per month, it is OpenAI's cheapest paid plan yet. Compared to the free version, ChatGPT Go users receive 10 times the content allowance, along with increased image generation and file upload capabilities. Designed specifically for price-sensitive Indian users who still desire advanced features, ChatGPT Go offers users access to XNUMX times the content allowance, along with support for more image generation and file uploads.
India becomes the first market
Nick Turley, global product director at OpenAI, stated at "X" that India is ChatGPT's second-largest user market after the United States, hence the choice of India as the launch market for ChatGPT Go. The company plans to expand the launch to other countries and regions after making adjustments based on user feedback.
Prior to this, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also met with India's IT Minister to discuss how to make generative AI more widely used in the Indian market through lower-cost solutions.
We just launched ChatGPT Go in India, a new subscription tier that gives users in India more access to our most popular features: 10x higher message limits, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads, and 2x longer memory compared with our free tier. All for Rs. 399. 🇮🇳

Differentiated functional configuration
Despite its low price, ChatGPT Go does have significant functional limitations. According to OpenAI's official India website, ChatGPT Go does not include the advanced reasoning capabilities of the GPT-5 model. Furthermore, its Deep Dive, custom GPT functions, and message and image generation and file upload quotas are lower than those of the ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans.
However, for general users, the ChatGPT Go plan is still more practical than the free plan, and can meet the needs of daily chatting, data query and simple creation.
Multi-tiered pricing strategy takes shape
With the launch of ChatGPT Go, OpenAI's subscription plans in India will be further tiered:
• ChatGPT Go: 390 rupees (approximately $4.6)
• ChatGPT Plus: 1999 rupees (approximately $22.95)
• ChatGPT Pro: 19990 INR (approximately $229.5 USD)
Among them, compared with the US market subscription prices of ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans of US$20 and US$200 respectively, the current subscription fee in India has increased relatively, which means that OpenAI is also adjusting its subscription strategy in different markets around the world.
The number of global users continues to grow
Nick Turley also revealed that ChatGPT's global weekly active users have exceeded 7 million, a significant increase from 3 million in March. With the launch of the ChatGPT Go subscription plan, OpenAI is clearly aiming to rapidly expand in emerging markets, attracting more users with affordable subscriptions and gradually guiding them to more advanced plans.
The launch of ChatGPT Go is not only OpenAI's pricing experiment in emerging markets, but also highlights the trend of generative AI services becoming increasingly accessible. For users, this lowers the barrier to entry, while for the industry, it represents a crucial step in determining how AI services balance cost, performance, and market penetration.
