Regarding the previous celebrity short video platform CameoSuing OpenAI's video generation tool Sora for trademark infringementIn one case, a U.S. federal court earlier issued a preliminary ruling in favor of Cameo and granted a temporary restraining order prohibiting OpenAI from using the word "Cameo" in its Sora App, effective until December 22.

OpenAI faces a temporary injunction from the court; the Sora App is temporarily prohibited from using the name "Cameo".

The ban covers Kameo and CameoVideo, and restricts Sora's portrait function.

According toCNBC TV reportIt was pointed out that the ban is not limited to the single word "Cameo", but also covers words with similar pronunciations or spellings such as "Kameo" and "CameoVideo".

The core of the controversy lies in a feature within the Sora app that allows users to upload their likeness to the app for use by themselves or others in generated AI videos. OpenAI named this feature "Cameo," which directly drew protests from Cameo, a company known for providing "celebrity-customized short videos."

Cameo filed a lawsuit in October of this year, alleging that OpenAI's naming conventions would confuse consumers and dilute its brand value.

Both sides responded: Cameo was pleased, OpenAI was dissatisfied.

Regarding the court's ruling, Cameo CEO Steven Galanis stated, "We are pleased with the court's decision, which acknowledges the need to protect consumers from confusion caused by OpenAI's use of the Cameo trademark." He emphasized that although this is a provisional order, he hopes OpenAI will eventually agree to permanently cease using the mark.

An OpenAI spokesperson responded with dissatisfaction: "We disagree with the claim in the lawsuit that anyone can claim exclusive ownership of the word 'cameo'." OpenAI stated that it will continue to present its case in court.

Subsequent development

U.S. District Judge Eumi K. Lee, who issued the temporary injunction, has scheduled a hearing for December 19, at which time the court will further review the case and decide whether to convert the temporary injunction into a permanent one. Until then, OpenAI must temporarily remove the relevant terms from its Sora App.
