After announcing many features, OpenAI announced earlier that it would reorganize in 2025 and officially set up aFor-profit companies, thereby raising more necessary funds and promoting the development of the original non-profit structure system with the assistance of this for-profit company.
OpenAI stated that its development goal is to createGeneral artificial intelligence (AGI, artificial general intelligence), and in order to achieve this goal, it stated in 2019 that it must raise at least US$100 billion (approximately NT$3200 billion). If it were to maintain a non-profit organizational structure with a profit cap, it would be difficult to achieve this goal. Therefore, it must transform into a profit-oriented system so that it can cooperate with more investment opportunities and further its original development goals.
Therefore, OpenAI will convert its existing for-profit organization into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (DPB). By issuing common stock and upholding its original corporate mission, it will continue to invest in the public interest, allowing the original non-profit structure to continue to develop and achieve its development goals, namely, to enable everyone to promote digital development through artificial intelligence.
In 2019, OpenAI received over $1 million in investment in its first round of financing, and subsequently received a $10 billion investment from Microsoft. In October of this year, it raised an additional $10 billion in funds, and its market value grew to $66 billion. However, even though it is expected to achieve up to $1570 billion in revenue this year, it still suffers losses of up to $37 billion due to the high costs of operating its services. This has forced OpenAI to come up with more ways to turn revenue into positive profits.
