Following May this yearOfficially announcedLater, OpenAI announced earlierCompleted the acquisitionio, a new startup team founded by former Apple Design Chief Jony Ive, and the two parties will work together to develop a new generation of AI devices to redefine the future of interaction between people and technology.
Following the completion of this transaction, Jony Ive's design studio, LoveFrom, will remain independent and will not be part of OpenAI. The LoveFrom team, including co-founders Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan, and approximately 50 engineers, designers, and researchers, has officially joined OpenAI and is expected to work closely with OpenAI's internal teams to advance the development of future AI hardware products.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive, they are collaborating on a series of "AI devices for everyone." The first product will be an unobtrusive, portable smart device capable of sensing its environment and user actions. While details have been kept under wraps, the two have stated that this device will not be a smartphone or smart glasses, meaning it will break away from existing consumer electronics design frameworks and create a completely new device type.
As Apple's former Chief Design Officer, Jony Ive, alongside the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, collaborated on iconic products such as the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, becoming a key figure in modern technology product design. Since leaving Apple in 2019 to found LoveFrom, Jony Ive has collaborated on design projects with numerous companies. This collaboration with OpenAI marks his largest product development initiative in recent years, and also symbolizes Jony Ive's shift from designing purely hardware products to exploring the integration of AI and hardware.
For OpenAI, this acquisition shows that it is no longer satisfied with just providing software technology services, and will actively expand into the consumer hardware market. From ChatGPT, GPT API, toThe AI browser that was recently releasedFrom its previous collaboration with Jony Ive's team to creating smart devices, OpenAI is attempting to build new hardware for the AI era and will compete head-on with technology companies such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft in the consumer market.
The market is still speculating about the positioning and purpose of this new device. Some analysts believe that the product may focus on application scenarios such as smart assistants and personal AI agents, and extend generative AI technology from virtual conversations to interactive experiences that are closer to daily life.
