OpenAI acquires testing and product analytics company Statsig for $11 billion, simultaneously launching an organizational restructuring

The new app CEO took office and immediately made changes

Fidji Simo, who joined OpenAI as CEO of its applications program from Instacart on August 8th, has already initiated a major personnel overhaul less than a month after joining. She emphasized that the application side will be key to driving the growth of ChatGPT and Codex services, necessitating a more flexible and focused organizational structure.

Under the new structure, Statsig founder Vijaye Raji will serve as OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Applications, overseeing core product development. Srinivas Narayanan, formerly head of engineering, will be promoted to the newly created Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of B2B Applications, focusing on the enterprise and government client markets.

As for former Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil, he has been transferred to OpenAI's research department as Vice President of Scientific AI, working with Chief Researcher Mark Chen to advance basic technologies. The original product team will be directly supervised by Fidji Simo, which means that OpenAI's application and research layers will have a clearer division of labor and achieve a complementary effect.

Statsig joins to strengthen product optimization and data-driven

Statsig is renowned for its product experimentation platform, helping companies quickly validate new features and optimize decision-making through large-scale A/B testing and data analysis. Its integration into the OpenAI ecosystem will enable its applications to be supported by more accurate data, enabling more efficient user experience tuning for products like ChatGPT and Codex.

OpenAI said the Statsig team will be integrated into the company but will continue to operate independently from its Seattle office. The integration will be carried out gradually to ensure that existing customer services are not affected. However, the transaction is still subject to regulatory review.

Strategic Implications of Application-End Layout

This acquisition is more than just a simple technology acquisition; it represents a strategic upgrade for OpenAI's application ecosystem. From the leadership restructuring to the team expansion, OpenAI demonstrates its commitment to both B2C and B2B markets. Statsig's technology will accelerate the evolution of consumer products, while the new division, led by Srinivas Narayanan, will provide more customized application solutions for businesses and governments.

For OpenAI, generative AI is no longer just about competing on models, but about making services faster, safer, and more contextually relevant. Fidji Simo's addition signifies that OpenAI's application-based services will enter "accelerator mode."
