Regarding the announcement at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 eventGalaxy z fold7Samsung has finally significantly reduced the thickness of this foldable screen phone. When flattened, it is only 4.2mm thick, and the equivalent thickness is only 8.9mm. However, this new phone has been questioned for removing the S Pen function, and even the battery capacity is only maintained at the same 4400mAh as the previous generation model, and it still only supports 25W charging specifications. In contrast, Chinese brands have achieved a similarly thin phone design but put in a battery capacity of more than 6100mAh.
Emphasizing consumers' demand for lighter, larger, and more compact foldable phones with better cameras
In response to this, Samsung stated that most Galaxy Z Fold series users hope for a thinner body, a larger screen and better camera specifications. Therefore, the design direction of the Galaxy Z Fold7 is to significantly reduce the thickness of the body, increase the screen size, and incorporate the camera system specifications of the Galaxy S series mobile phones. In this way, the problems of foldable screen mobile phones that have been criticized in the past, such as heavy body and poor camera specifications, etc.
Removing the S Pen is the fastest way to reduce the thickness of the body, but in fact, new stylus technology has also begun to be developed.
To further pursue thinner and lighter bodies, Samsung inevitably had to work on the S Pen function. After all, the Wacom stylus technology it has used in the past requires a thin rectangular digitizer under the display panel, which is quite thick. If Samsung wants to compete with the thin and light designs launched by Chinese brands, removing the S Pen function is indeed the fastest way to achieve thinness. However, this has unsurprisingly caused many consumers to question it and has also caused a lot of media coverage.

In fact, Samsung launched theGalaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition, in pursuit of lightness and thinness, the S Pen function was removed, so it may not be surprising that the Galaxy Z Fold7 launched this year does not support S Pen.
But Samsung announced at the end of last yearCooperate with Korean touch chip manufacturer HiDeep, jointly developed stylus technology that does not require a digitizer and battery design. In theory, the stylus function can be used on thinner and lighter screens. However, it was not used in the Galaxy Z Fold7 launched this time. This may be due to the fact that the technology of cooperation with HiDeep will be provided to Chinese brand manufacturers first. On the other hand, it may also be that this cooperation technology has not yet been perfected, so it cannot yet be applied to commercially available products.
The battery capacity remains unchanged and high-power charging specifications are not adopted, which may be related to concerns about the recurrence of battery accidents.
In addition, compared with thevivoThe battery capacity is 6600mAh, and the thickness of the body is only 4.1mm.Honor Magic V5The battery capacity design starts from 5820mAh and goes up to 6100mAh. Even the processor specifications are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. The waterproof and dustproof levels of both are IP58/IP59. The Galaxy Z Fold7 only maintains a 4400mAh power design and even still uses a 25W charging specification, which obviously causes many people to question it.
However, from a design perspective, both vivo and Honor have adopted the approach of "moving" the rear camera module outside the body (so the camera module appears more prominent), allowing the body to maintain a thin and light form while also accommodating a larger battery capacity design. However, although Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold7's lens also protrudes from the back of the body, many camera module components are still placed inside the body, thus occupying a lot of space that could originally be used for battery capacity.
However, the relevant market view is that SamsungGalaxy Note 7 battery fire incidents, subsequently adopting a relatively conservative approach to battery specification design, and not actively investing in higher-density batteries or higher-power charging specifications like Chinese brands. In particular, many brands are now adopting silicon-carbon anode battery designs to increase the energy density of batteries in thin and light mobile phones, which has certain advantages for increasing the battery capacity of mobile phones with concave screens. However, Samsung is clearly still concerned about battery design at this stage, and therefore still maintains a maximum charging specification of 25W in its mobile phones to avoid further battery accidents that will affect its brand image and actual sales performance (after all, after experiencing an accident, the brand image will be even more affected if another accident occurs).
