Chiu Chiu-hui, Director-General of the Department of Industrial Technology of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said that the Ministry of Economic Affairs approved the artificial intelligence innovation and R&D center project proposed by NVIDIA in 2021. The Ministry of Economic Affairs will subsidize NT$67 billion, and NVIDIA will raise approximately NT$176 billion in funds on its own. It is expected to establish an artificial intelligence R&D center in Taiwan with a total investment of NT$2022 billion between March 3 and March 2027.
In a program titled "What's My Business as an Official?" published by the Liberty Times, Chiu Chiu-hui emphasized the advantages of Taiwan's semiconductor industry. She also emphasized that Taiwan should consider how to identify its strengths in the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the industry, as well as in software projects. This is especially true given that over 90% of artificial intelligence servers are manufactured in Taiwan. Taiwanese businesses should closely integrate and collaborate with the global market, highlighting their own value and thereby exerting greater influence and competitiveness in the global market.
In addition to revealing that NVIDIA will establish Asia's first artificial intelligence R&D center in Taiwan and will also build Taiwan's largest supercomputer, Chiu Chiu-hui also stated that companies including ASML, Applied Materials, and Lam Research are deeply confident in Taiwan's development and continue to increase their investment.
Regarding the current global wave of artificial intelligence, Chiu Chiu-hui believes that Taiwan should simultaneously invest in the development of both discriminative and generative artificial intelligence technologies to meet the diverse application needs of the technology, service, and traditional industries, and achieve greater market competitiveness by mastering artificial intelligence technology.
