Just like Apple's collaboration with Adobe and PixarUSDZ general scene description file formatTo make AR content easier to share and use, NVIDIA announced in a special speech during SIGGRAPH 2022 that it will work with Pixar, Adobe, Autodesk, Siemens, and many media, game, robotics, industrial automation and retail companies to make Universal Scene Description (USD) the foundation of the open metaverse and 3D Internet.
This collaboration will develop a multi-year development roadmap, which is expected to expand the application capabilities of universal scene description beyond visual effects. It is expected to be widely used in architecture, engineering, manufacturing, scientific computing, robotics and industrial digital twins, and promote the development of industrial metaverse applications.
To accelerate development and enable widespread adoption of Universal Scene Description, NVIDIA has announced the development of an open Universal Scene Description Compatibility Testing and Certification Suite. This suite will be free for any developer to use to test their own versions of Universal Scene Description and verify that they produce the expected results.
In addition, NVIDIA will provide a series of free resources to accelerate the industry's adoption of USD. These include thousands of purpose-built USD assets and hundreds of online on-demand tutorials, documentation, and development tools to help users without 3D expertise build virtual worlds.
NVIDIA will also create a universal scene description plug-in for popular 3D software ecosystems and its own Omniverse platform, which is expected to be compatible with currently common software tools such as PTC Creo, SideFX Houdini, Autodesk Alias, Autodesk Civil3D, and Siemens Xcelerator.
This collaboration also plans to form a working committee to focus on the development of Universal Scene Description, collect relevant feedback, and allow NVIDIA to accelerate the development of Universal Scene Description-related application resources. In addition, industry players such as Adobe, Autodesk, Pixar, and Siemens will jointly promote the growth of Universal Scene Description applications.
