NTT DOCOMO announced a partnership with NVIDIA for its domestic network services in Japan. The partnership will use GPU acceleration and software-defined technologies to improve the operational efficiency of its 5G network services. This will also enhance the flexibility and scalability of Open RAN operations while reducing operating costs and power efficiency.
This solution leverages Fujitsu's NVIDIA Aerial vRAN stack and NVIDIA integrated accelerators to build a high-performance 5G virtualized radio access network (vRAN). This enables a fully software- and cloud-defined network architecture and accelerates the scheduling of complex connectivity information across telecom networks.
NTT DOCOMO has become the first operator to commercially deploy a 5G virtualized radio access network (VRAN) using the NVIDIA Aerial platform for telecommunications services. Compared to existing deployment solutions, NTT DOCOMO claims the NVIDIA Aerial platform will reduce total costs by up to 30%, lower network occupancy by 50%, and reduce base station power consumption by 50%.
Fujitsu, NVIDIA, and Wind River continue to collaborate under the 2021G Open RAN Ecosystem Experience (OREX) service brand, launched by NTT DOCOMO in February 2, to develop a 5G virtualized radio access network (VRAN) that complies with Open RAN standards. Fujitsu plans to collaborate with more industry partners globally to commercialize this high-performance, energy-efficient, software-defined 5G VAN.
