Is your wallet overflowing with ID cards? Or do you often forget your employee ID and get stopped at the company entrance? The Digital Development Department (DDM) has been preparing for a long time to launch a new initiative...Digital voucher walletThe Digital Identity Wallet app finally launched its trial operation today (December 17th). The app aims to digitize physical identification documents, allowing people to pick up packages at convenience stores, enter and exit offices, and even rent cars abroad in the future, all with just their mobile phones.
Digital credential wallet: Your mobile phone is your ID card
The focus of this trial operation is to validate the concepts of "self-management" and "minimum disclosure." Simply put, you can decide which identity information to show to whom.
• Pick up your package at the convenience store:Currently, we are partnering with the three major telecom operators. By using a "telecom card" linked to a mobile number, customers can present a QR code at FamilyMart (all stores) and 7-Eleven (some stores) to receive pre-paid packages without having to show their ID card.
• Employee ID/Room Key:Businesses or hotels can issue digital vouchers that allow employees or guests to use their mobile phones to enter and exit, replacing physical cards.
• Future expansion:The Digital Development Department announced that it will gradually open up downloads of driver's licenses, digital student IDs (such as those from National Chiao Tung University), graduation certificates, and business licenses next year.
Minister of Digital Development Lin Yi-ching emphasized that this system adopts international standards (such as W3C's VC verifiable credentials) and is expected to align with international practices in the future. Imagine being able to go to a foreign bar without a passport to prove your age, or rent a car abroad using a digital driver's license on your phone (currently partnering with Loop and ZOCHA, and will be integrated with iRent and other car rental services in the future).
However, the biggest pain point at present is data transfer after changing phones. Because the credentials are linked to the device, a new application must be made when changing phones. The Data Development Department stated that it will study a more convenient backup mechanism.
