However, due to manufacturing costs, R&D, and large-scale marketing investments in the initial launch phase of the new console, profits only reached 1451 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 19.5%, significantly lower than the doubling of revenue. But thanks to overall revenue expansion, net profit still saw a strong growth of 83.1% in the first half of the year, reaching 1989 billion yen.
The Nintendo Switch 2 sold over 10 million units in six months, with Mario Kart World achieving an astonishing installation rate.
In terms of hardware sales, the new Nintendo Switch 2 console sold a total of 1036 million units in the first half of the year. Nintendo pointed out in its financial report that although market demand cooled down somewhat in the second quarter (July-September) compared to the sales performance in the first quarter (April-June) after its launch (454 million units sold in the second quarter), the overall performance was still strong, indicating that market demand was stable.
With the transition between generations, sales of the previous generation Nintendo Switch family (OLED and Lite models) declined further, with only 189 million units sold in the first half of the year (a year-on-year decrease of 60.0%). Combined, the total hardware sales of both generations of consoles reached 1225 million units in the first half of the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 159.5%.
In terms of software, Nintendo Switch 2 software sold 2062 million units in the first half of the year, while Nintendo Switch software sales remained stable, totaling 6156 million units, but showing a year-on-year decrease of 12.4%. The total software sales for all models were 8218 million units, with a year-on-year increase of 16.9%.
Among the initial lineup of the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World, which was launched and bundled with the console, performed the best, with a cumulative sales of 957 million units in the first half of the year (of which 810 million were bundled versions), meaning that its installation rate on the console reached 92.4%, almost reaching the point where everyone had a set.
The next best-selling Nintendo Switch 2 games were *Dunkigan Power Run* (349 million copies) and *Super Mario Party!* (116 million copies). Notably, the evergreen *Mario Kart 8 Deluxe* on the Nintendo Switch platform still sold 137 million copies in the first half of this year, despite the release of a new version.
Digital sales declined slightly by 2.8%, but the full-year hardware sales forecast for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been revised upward to 1900 million units.
In terms of digital sales (including digital games, DLC content, Nintendo Switch Online, etc.), revenue for the first half of the year was 1555 billion yen, a slight decrease of 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. This phenomenon may be related to the fact that the new console has just been launched, players initially tend to buy physical games or bundles, and the slowdown in the consumption of digital content on older platforms.
Based on its strong performance in the first half of the year, Nintendo has simultaneously revised upward its earnings forecast for the full fiscal year 2025 (ending March 2026):
• Sales:The forecast was revised upwards by 18.4% (to 2.25 trillion yen).
• Operating profit:The forecast was revised upwards by 15.6% (to 3700 billion yen).
• net income:The forecast was revised upwards by 16.7% (to 3500 billion yen).
Nintendo has also made adjustments to its hardware and software sales forecasts:
• Nintendo Switch 2 (New Console) Hardware:Sales forecasts have been revised upward by 26.7%, from 1500 million units to 1900 million units.
• Nintendo Switch 2 (New Console) Software:Sales forecasts have been revised upward by 6.7% to 4800 million units.
• Nintendo Switch (old console) hardware:Sales forecasts have been revised down 11.1% to 400 million units.
• Nintendo Switch (older console) software:Sales forecasts have been revised upward by 19.0% to 125 million units.
This revised financial forecast indicates that Nintendo is confident in the upcoming Christmas holiday sales season in Europe and the United States for the new console, Nintendo Switch 2, and also expects that the software purchasing power of users of the old Nintendo Switch platform will continue to be higher than previously anticipated.
