Nintendo has once again brought a nostalgic game that will captivate players - "Mario and Wario" (マリオとワリオ, MARIO & WARIO), which was originally released only in the Japanese market. This time it is available for play on the Super Nintendo Virtual Console platform and supports use on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. You can even reproduce the classic control experience through the Nintendo Switch 2's Joy-Con mouse mode.
This game, which debuted on the Super Nintendo console platform in Japan in 1993, was produced by Satoshi Tajiri, the father of "Pokémon", and developed by Game Freak. The gaming experience of that time, which was operated with a mouse, can now be reproduced through the Joy-Con mouse mode of Nintendo Switch 2.
Mario & Wario's premise is both bizarre and intriguing. The story begins with the greedy Wario placing a bucket on Mario's head, preventing him from seeing what's ahead. Players must control the fairy Wanda, using a mouse to guide Mario through 100 levels filled with puzzles and traps, all the while aiming for Luigi. The game, a blend of side-scrolling and puzzle elements, was considered one of the few Nintendo experiments of the time that emphasized unconventional controls.
This port retains the original's mouse-based controls, allowing Nintendo Switch players to play directly with a USB mouse, while Nintendo Switch 2 players can fully experience the Joy-Con's mouse mode. This not only demonstrates Nintendo's continued commitment to creative interface design, but also enhances the flexibility of the Nintendo Switch 2 as a versatile entertainment device.
In addition to "Mario & Wario", Nintendo also launched two other classic Super Nintendo games on the Virtual Console platform, including "Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind" and SNK's classic fighting game "Fatal Fury Special Edition", which includes many popular characters from the original "Fatal Fury" and "Fatal Fury 2".
For nostalgic players and Nintendo fans, this remake is not only a reappearance of a classic, but also a symbol of Nintendo's spirit of continuing to reinterpret old games with modern technology - making the mouse operation of 30 years ago become a hot topic again in the era of AI and next-generation interactive technology.
