Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation), and Microsoft (Xbox) earlier released a rare statement.joint statementThe statement emphasizes that the three parties will work together to improve the safe gaming experience across platforms. This statement not only symbolizes the game console industry's official response to society's expectations for game security, but also brings the long-standing behind-the-scenes cooperation model between the three parties into the open.

Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox issued a joint statement outlining three principles to protect player safety.

From Competition to Cooperation: Establishing Three Security Principles

The joint statement indicates that the three companies will integrate advanced technology, community research, and professional oversight to ensure a safe gaming environment for players, especially younger generations. To achieve this goal, the three parties have established three core principles: "prevention," "cooperation," and "responsibility," to improve existing protection mechanisms.

• Prevention: Empowering Parents and Players

On the prevention front, the three companies pledged to provide more comprehensive control options and parental control tools. This includes assisting parents in creating suitable gaming experiences for their children, and widely disseminating usage guidelines for these safety tools through their official websites, support channels, and other means. Furthermore, product design will prioritize transparency and player autonomy, ensuring players fully understand the rules and terms of service.

• Partnership: Connecting Industry, Government, and Academia
Despite being competitors, the three parties will maintain close cooperation on security issues. The statement mentions that they will work with global industry peers, publishers, law enforcement agencies, and regulatory bodies, and develop policy guidelines through joint research. Furthermore, they will independently collaborate with external research centers to conduct in-depth studies on the impact of games on mental and physical health.

• Responsibility: Zero tolerance for violations
Regarding behaviors that disrupt the gaming experience, all three parties emphasized their determination to enforce the law. In addition to providing a simple reporting mechanism, content that violates community guidelines will be removed, and measures such as restricting service access will be taken against offending players. For serious offenses or repeat offenders who refuse to heed warnings, stricter restrictions will be imposed. If illegal activities are involved or cause substantial harm to players, the platform will proactively notify law enforcement agencies to intervene, depending on the circumstances.

Analysis of viewpoints

In the past, we often saw Microsoft and Sony clashing over acquisitions or exclusive games, but on issues such as "cyberbullying," "child pornography," and "personal data security," they face common enemies and social pressure.

With cross-platform games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Apex Legends becoming mainstream, single-platform regulation is no longer sufficient to protect players. If a malicious player's account is locked on Xbox, they can still harass others on PlayStation, creating a loophole in the protection network.

This collaboration among the "Big Three" is, to some extent, aimed at preventing such cross-platform security vulnerabilities and responding to increasingly stringent digital content regulations from various governments through "self-discipline," thereby preventing excessive interference by public authorities in the development of the gaming industry.
