As previously rumored, Nintendo has finally officially confirmed that the new console will be called Nintendo Switch 2. The company also unveiled the actual console's appearance, confirming it will feature a larger screen. The left and right Joy-Con controllers have also been redesigned and now feature a magnetic interface for fixing.
Nintendo has not yet announced the specific details of the new machine, only showing the general appearance of the machine through a trailer video, and at the end using the number "2" to highlight the name of the new machine is Nintendo Switch 2.
Among them, the connection method between the bottom of the new machine and the Dock accessory is still through USB-C, but the fixing hole position has been slightly adjusted. At the same time, the heat dissipation holes and power and volume control buttons are also maintained at the top, and an additional set of USB-C connection ports are added on the top, which is obviously to facilitate users to charge while playing.
The rear stand has been redesigned to be more stable and accommodate a wider range of angles. As previously rumored, the new dock also features rounded corners and is emblazoned with the Nintendo Switch 2 logo.
The left and right Joy-Con controllers have also been enlarged to reflect the larger screen size. Similar to the joysticks, supports have been added to the bottom edge, likely to enhance their durability. The original mounting system, which used slide rails to hold the left and right sides of the screen, has been redesigned to a magnetic interface, with metal contacts ensuring a secure connection. Like previous models, the new left and right Joy-Con controllers can also be used as independent controllers with the addition of accessories.
Although this trailer did not disclose the game lineup expected to be released simultaneously with the new console, it seems to indirectly foreshadow the release of a new "Mario Kart" game. It also confirmed that boxed and downloadable versions of Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive games will be released. The Nintendo Switch 2 itself is also backward compatible with Nintendo Switch games, but it also mentioned that some games may not be supported. Detailed details will still have to wait for Nintendo to announce later.
While Nintendo didn't announce a release date in this trailer, it's expected to launch in 2025, with further details to be announced during the Nintendo Direct event on April 4nd of this year. Based on this prediction, the Nintendo Switch 2 should launch between April and May of this year at the earliest.
Nintendo also announced that it will hold Nintendo Switch 2 experience sessions in multiple cities around the world. In North America, the sessions will begin in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Toronto on April 4th, and in Europe in Paris, London, Milan, Berlin, Madrid, and Amsterdam. Australia will be held in Melbourne on May 4th. As for Asia, it will be held in Makuhari, Tokyo on April 5th and in Seoul, South Korea on May 10st. Experience sessions will also be held in Hong Kong and Taipei, but the specific schedule has not yet been determined.
