After years of waiting by players worldwideAssassin's Creed live-action seriesFinally, there's been substantial progress! Netflix officially announced earlier that this major adaptation series, created in collaboration with Ubisoft, will...Filming has already begun in Rome, Italy.Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the story will be set in the ancient Roman Empire in 64 AD. In addition to revealing the full cast, the official announcement also revealed that this will be a brand new original story exploring the struggle between the Knights Templar and the Assassin Brotherhood for control of humanity's future.
Not letting Ezio steal the spotlight: Focusing on "Nero the Tyrant" and "The Great Fire of Rome".
While this isn't the first time the Assassin's Creed series has set foot on Roman soil (Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in 2010 is already a classic), this will be the first time the series has delved into the "real ancient Roman Empire" period in a live-action film.
The year 64 AD was a year of great drama. In that year, the historically famous Great Fire of Rome burned down nearly two-thirds of the imperial capital; in response, the Roman Emperor Nero, in an attempt to divert attention from his ineffective governance, began a brutal persecution of dissidents and Christians, which even triggered a series of assassinations and civil wars.
For the Assassin's Creed universe, which has always been adept at seamlessly blending "historical events" with "conspiracy theories," this era filled with tyranny, fire, and assassination is the perfect stage for Assassins (the Hidden Ones) and Templars (the Order of the Ancients) to engage in a power struggle in the shadows.
The behind-the-scenes talent behind "Westworld" and "The Last Battle" has revealed the full cast.
To recreate the grand epic of ancient Rome, the production team has now fully moved into Italy and is primarily filming at the legendary Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
For the behind-the-scenes team, Netflix brought in Roberto Patino, who had worked on Westworld, and David Wiener, who had worked on Halo, to serve as co-producers and executive producers.
The cast also features a strong ensemble of talented actors. In addition to Lola Petticrew and Toby Wallace, who were previously confirmed to be in leading roles, the newly confirmed regular cast includes:
• Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (who starred in Foundation)
• Youssef Kerkour (who starred in "Knights of the Seven Kingdoms")
• Mirren Mack (who starred in "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple")
• Louis McCartney (Strange Things: The First Shadow)
Netflix and Ubisoft's ambitions in film and television adaptations
The live-action Assassin's Creed series isn't the first collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft. Their partnership has grown increasingly close and fruitful in recent years, with projects such as the 2023 animated series Captain Laser: Blood Dragon Remix, adapted from The Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and last year's critically acclaimed animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, which brought Sam Fisher back to the screen. With this successful experience in animated adaptations, Netflix's foray into a large-scale live-action historical epic undoubtedly carries extremely high expectations.
