Earlier this year, before CES 2024, the new keyboard designs for Windows operating systems were announced, and they will all includeCopilot independent buttonConfiguration, allowing users to quickly call the Copilot service directly through this button. Perhaps in response to many users' complaints in the market, or more likely to avoid the EU's adjustment and finding that Microsoft has violated market competition, it is expected that in the nextWindows 11 update, adding customization options that allow users to customize the corresponding functions of Copilot buttons.
Microsoft's current Copilot button design is based on the Windows button on the right side of the standard Windows keyboard configuration, allowing users to quickly call the Copilot service through this button in the Windows 11 environment, but in older versions of the Windows operating system, it will only trigger the launch of the Windows Search function.
Microsoft explained that the Copilot button only corresponds to quickly calling the Copilot service and does not provide the function of combining operations with other keys. As a result, many users complained that this adjustment affects their user experience, and even believed that Microsoft's move would affect the convenience of Windows keyboard operations.
However, Microsoft's earlier announcement of the next wave of Windows 11 updates will allow users to manually adjust the Copilot button's mapping function, though the default will still be to call the Copilot service. Some believe this adjustment stems from user dissatisfaction with the Copilot button's design, coupled with the risk that mandatory Copilot use could lead to an EU investigation into whether Microsoft is interfering with market competition. Consequently, Microsoft subsequently relaxed regulations, allowing users to customize the Copilot button's mapping function.
Although users are allowed to customize the functions corresponding to Copilot buttons, the functions can actually be used through Copilot service calls, which does not allow users to fully customize the corresponding operation buttons or key combinations they want.
However, if you are using a keyboard with the older Windows key configuration, this adjustment will not have any effect.
