The "Traditional Chinese Teaching Materials AI Assistant" model, which is trained with Traditional Chinese data and meets the Taiwan Chinese Language Proficiency Benchmark issued by the Ministry of Education, is based on the Microsoft Phi-3.5 natural language model. It is enhanced with all Traditional Chinese corpus and Chinese teaching materials of the Ministry of Education to enhance its Chinese language and teaching material knowledge. It is then fine-tuned using the command fine-tuning program designed by Professor Cai Zonghan's team in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Central University.
Because large-scale international language models are often driven by market demand and trained primarily in English, with a strong emphasis on simplified Chinese, these models often lack empathy with Taiwanese culture and values. To better align with local Taiwanese culture, Microsoft Taiwan collaborated with Huadian Networks and Professor Tsai Tsung-han to develop a "Chinese Language Teaching AI Assistant" model.
This model can automatically write Traditional Chinese texts, create PowerPoint presentation materials, and generate reading and cloze tests, thereby significantly reducing the time Chinese teachers spend writing Traditional Chinese teaching content. At the same time, it allows Chinese learners around the world to customize their learning plans based on their background and language proficiency, and then, with the help of AI assistants, rapidly promote global Chinese teaching and learning efficiency.
Shi Licheng, Microsoft's Global Assistant General Counsel and General Manager of Microsoft Taiwan's Public and Legal Affairs Division, stated, "Using technology to empower digital transformation in education has always been Microsoft's goal. This collaboration with Huadian Networks and Professor Tsai Tsung-han of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Central University to develop the 'Traditional Chinese Language Teaching AI Assistant' model aims to contribute to Taiwan's cultural heritage through Traditional Chinese language learning. We hope this model will not only benefit Chinese language teachers and learners, but also, through various open-source language models, establish an AI-enabled Traditional Chinese language education ecosystem, enabling more industry partners to collaborate and promote Traditional Chinese language education."
The "Traditional Chinese Teaching Materials AI Assistant" model has been developed and integrated into the Microsoft Teams user interface. Chinese teachers and learners can install it by simply using Microsoft Teams.
