Microsoft earlier launched a new character image for the voice mode of its AI assistant Copilot, andKnown as "Mico"This friendly-looking, block-shaped object, described by Microsoft as "expressive, customizable, and warm," aims to become the new face of Copilot voice interaction, paying homage to the Office assistant "Clippy" (paperclip) of the past, and reinventing it with AI technology.
Microsoft AI head Mustafa Suleyman said in a blog post that Mico is an answer to what an "AI companion" might look like. The optional visual avatar listens to the user, reacts, and changes color based on interactions.
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, said: "In this era of doubt, we choose optimism. Instead of developing technology that requires more attention, we want to create technology that can give you back time." This wave of updates fully demonstrates Microsoft's determination to create "people-centric" AI, so that technology can truly serve humanity, rather than the other way around.
Currently, Mico is only available in the US, UK, and Canada, and is enabled by default as Copilot's voice mode. It's based on Microsoft-developed models like MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-Preview. Users can also disable it if they're uncomfortable speaking to a virtual character.
In addition to Mico, Microsoft also announced several new features for Copilot, including:
A new era of group collaboration: Copilot Groups
Going beyond the traditional standalone AI model, Copilot Groups enables up to 32 people to collaborate simultaneously for brainstorming, co-writing, planning, and learning discussions. The system automatically summarizes discussion threads, proposes options, tallies votes, and assigns tasks, significantly improving group efficiency. Simply share a link, and members can join the same conversation space, creating a truly shared AI experience.
Long-term memory: your second brain
Copilot now has long-term memory capabilities, allowing it to remember important user information, such as training plans and anniversaries, and actively recall them in subsequent conversations. Combined with the ability to connect to services like OneDrive, Outlook, and Gmail, Copilot can search data across platforms, allowing users to find the files, emails, and itineraries they need using natural language.
