Peter Moore, formerly head of Microsoft's Xbox business and president and COO of SEGA of America, and currently vice president of Unity, recently stated in an interview that when the Xbox 360 console faced a negative image crisis due to the "three reds of death" problem, he instructed the internal team to launch a console war. He also believes that the competition between Microsoft and Sony in the gaming market will make the gaming market more active.
In an exclusive interview with Front Office Sports' "My Other Passion" podcast, Peter Moore explained that the Xbox 360 was facing a negative image crisis due to its "three reds of death" issue, and that Xbox needed another competitive force to recover. Therefore, he instructed his internal team to launch a console war, seeking to compete with Sony's PlayStation in the gaming market.
Peter Moore emphasized that this approach wasn't intended to create divisions among gamers, but rather to invigorate the gaming market, allowing more worthwhile games to enter the market and providing players with more choices. Peter Moore also believes that if Microsoft hadn't persisted despite the negative image crisis surrounding the "Three Reds of Death" glitch, the gaming market might not have achieved its current level of diversity, Microsoft might not have held any significant market advantage, and might even have stopped developing its Xbox gaming business.
Before joining Microsoft, Peter Moore worked for Reebok for many years. After joining Microsoft, he began to be responsible for the Xbox business and even promoted the development of the Xbox 360. Therefore, some people believe that the reason for his later departure from Microsoft was related to the negative image crisis caused by the "three reds of death" glitch.
After leaving Microsoft, Peter Moore chose to join EA (Electronic Arts), and his original position at Microsoft was taken over by Don Mattrick, the former president of EA Worldwide Studios (Editor’s note:Don Mattrick later left Microsoft and became CEO of Zynga. In January 2021, Peter Moore joined Unity as senior vice president and general manager of the sports and real-time entertainment divisions.
